MANKATO, Minn. -- Freshman Ryleigh Houston's career-high three points paced the North Dakota women's hockey team to a 4-0 win, and weekend sweep, against Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Center.
Redshirt-freshman goalie Kristen Campbell got her second start of the season and made 22 saves, including eight on the penalty kill, to earn her first career shutout.
With the sweep, North Dakota (12-7-5, 8-5-4-2 WCHA) has won all four games this year against Minnesota State (6-17-2, 3-13-1-0 WCHA).
After a come-from-behind win the day before, the Fighting Hawks wanted to come out strong in the series finale, and that's just what they did. UND out-shot the Mavericks 19-5 in the first period and held a 3-0 advantage when the first period buzzer sounded.
UND got on the board within the first three minutes, as a third defenseman scored for the Fighting Hawks over the weekend. During a delayed penalty, Jordan Hampton received the puck up at the point and fired off a slap shot that beat MSU goaltender Brianna Quade for her fourth goal of the season.
At the 8:34 mark of the period, a penalty shot was awarded to North Dakota after a Maverick defenseman covered the puck in the crease. Houston took the shot and slipped the puck five hole for her sixth of the season.
Amy Menke scored the third and final goal of the period for UND in the waning minutes. While on the power play, Quade kicked out a rebound to her right and Menke seized the opportunity to record her 46th goal of her career and her 99th career point.
In the second period, UND scored its final goal of the game, this one coming off the stick of Mankato, Minn., native Rebekah Kolstad. Gracen Hirschy entered the zone with the puck, before making a drop pass to Kolstad, who then fired a shot past Quade.
Minnesota State actually out-shot North Dakota in the second period, but it was mostly due to UND being assessed two minor penalties and one major penalty during the period. However, UND's PK unit was brilliant and shut down all of Minnesota State's opportunities.
The third and final period saw two sets of matching penalties and neither team was able to get much offense generated. UND out-shot MSU, 9-7, in the third to close out the 4-0 win.
North Dakota hits the road next weekend for a pair of games against Wisconsin, Jan. 21-22, in Madison, Wis.
