AUBURN, Ala. – The University of North Dakota softball team lost to No. 2 Auburn, 6-0, on Thursday night at Jane B. Moore Field.
The Tigers got on the first in the bottom of the first inning with a sac fly. Auburn then scored five runs in the third inning behind five hits and one error to take a 6-0 lead.
Despite the lop-sided affair in the third inning, UND stayed with the No. 2 Tigers, earning three hits in the contest, while striking out four Auburn batters. Dani Romero, Kaylin VanDomelen and Rachael Waynick recorded the hits for the Fighting Hawks.
In the circle, Kaylin VanDomelen started for UND and threw 2.1 innings before Hannah Bergh came in during the third. VanDomelen gave up five hits and five earned runs, while Bergh conceded three hits without any runs in 2.2 innings of work. Freshman Nikki Pica finished the game, pitching the seventh inning without a single hit.
Auburn earned its 10th win of the season, improving to 10-1, while North Dakota falls to 6-5 on the year.
The Fighting Hawks return to the diamond tomorrow evening for a second game against Auburn as part of the first day of the Tiger Invitational.
