Montana shuts out UND in third game

MISSOULA, Mont. – After splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, the University of North Dakota softball team suffered a 2-0 loss to Montana on Sunday afternoon at the Grizzly Softball Field.

“We got beat in a good softball game today,” head coach Jordan Stevens said. “Yes we made some miscues and gave away some at-bats, but we played with energy and our team got better this weekend.”

The Fighting Hawks limited the Grizzlies to just one earned run on the day, as both sides committed two errors. Montana recorded seven hits through six innings, while North Dakota was held to just three hits through seven.

Montana scored both of its runs off errors, with one in the second and one in the third. The Grizzlies committed both of their errors in the fourth inning, and despite a single by Alicia Young in the frame, the Fighting Hawks were unable to capitalize and left two stranded on base.

It would be the last time in the game that UND would have runners in scoring position, as North Dakota was held to just one single and one base on balls in the final three innings.

The Grizzlies had a strong performance in the circle from Michaela Hood, who struck out 12 UND batters in the contest to help Montana claim the series win.

Redshirt junior Kaylin VanDomelen threw all six innings for UND and only conceded the one earned run while striking out three.

North Dakota continues Big Sky Conference action next weekend with a three-game series against Weber State, March 31-April 1, in Ogden Utah. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. (CT), with Saturday's game starting at 1 p.m.
