OGDEN, Utah – Despite holding Weber State to five scoreless innings, the University of North Dakota softball team lost Saturday's finale to the Wildcats, 8-4.

Weber State scored all eight runs in the bottom of the fifth off six hits and two errors. Excluding the fifth-inning, North Dakota held the Wildcats to five hits and no runs in the other five innings of play.

The Fighting Hawks drop to 13-23 (1-5 Big Sky) on the season, while Weber State is now 20-11-1 (4-1 Big Sky).

After two scoreless innings of softball, North Dakota jumped on the board first with three runs in the third inning. Two singles and a base on balls loaded the bases for UND, before Mary Martin hit a double to score all three runners and put UND up 3-0.

Neither team connected on a hit in the fourth inning, but then Weber State put together its massive fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead.

North Dakota was undeterred after giving up the lead and put together some strong hits in the top of the sixth in an attempt to reduce its deficit. With the bases loaded, Rachael Waynick hit a single to center field to score Autumn Cervantez from third. Unfortunately, the Wildcats closed out the inning to strand three runners on base for UND.

In the top of the seventh, UND recorded two more hits, putting Deja Miller in scoring position, but the Wildcats got the final out to take the 8-4 win.

A total of four batters for UND had two-hit games: Victoria Minor, Rachael Waynick, Mary Martin and Dani Romero.

North Dakota hosts its home opener next week, hosting South Dakota State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5. First pitch against the Jackrabbits at the Apollo Sports Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT).
