EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn.-- South Dakota State's Darien Poelstra collected a rebound off the crossbar and finished late in the second overtime to boost the visiting Jackrabbits to a 2-1 golden goal win, clinching at least a share of The Summit League regular season championship in the process. Poelstra's tally came just moments after UND appeared to have won the match on a second goal from senior
Katie Moller, but the goal was disallowed due to offsides in the 108th minute.
"I think you have to credit the opposition, they came in playing for a championship and they wanted it," UND head coach
Chris Logan said. "The second half we woke up and I thought the game was even. Offensively, we just didn't have a great day in terms of our attack. Katie scored the penalty, but outside of that we weren't overly efficient and strong up there."
The first half saw plenty of Grade-A chances for both sides, including a missed penalty shot in the 37th minute by SDSU's Annie Williams. Her shot whistled wide to the left to keep the match scoreless, one of several high-paced plays in that opening frame.
SDSU's Leah Manuleleua couldn't solve UND keeper
Olivia Swenson through a flurry of shots right in the middle of the box at point-blank range midway through the opening period. She got one on goal that Swenson re-directed back to her and she fired two more shots on which Swenson stood tall to keep the clean sheet in that first half.
UND's best opportunity came shortly after that with the Fighting Hawks gaining a pair of corner kicks, the second of which saw
Karly Sandoval's header sail high.
At the break, SDSU out-shot UND, 14-5, with the UND defense shining in key moments.
South Dakota State's Marisa Schultz finally was able to get the game's first tally as her shot curled in from the left side of the 18 box past a diving Swenson five minutes into the new half.
Later, in the 20th minute, more SDSU pressure produced a shot that Swenson made a nice play on to punch it over the crossbar for her seventh of nine saves on the afternoon.
With 15:37 to go in regulation,
Ashley Ebeling was hauled down while charging towards the net to draw a penalty shot.
Katie Moller then lined up and fired a shot low and to the right, past Maggie Smither for the equalizer and a 1-all tie.
With three minutes remaining the Jacks got a bounding ball on frame that squirted free into a precarious place before
Karleen Yapello was able to cleanly redirect from the far side, avoiding damage and eventually pushing the game into extra sessions.
In the overtime, SDSU controlled play for the duration of the opening minutes and had a few chances. Swenson thwarted a clever back-footed chance by Manuleleua in the sixth minute with her back to the goal trying to catch the senior napping, but to no avail.
In the second extra frame, Swenson met a laser off the foot of Manuleleua from the near post, falling to her knees and stopping the right-footed strike with both hands. A few minutes later, another bullet was dodged on Schultz's shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.
With under three minutes left in the second extra session,
Katie Moller appeared to have ended the match with a strike that found the back of the net on a loose ball in front. However, the play was whistled offsides as SDSU survived a big chance. The Jacks would use that momentum to turn in the game-winner just under 90 seconds later as Schultz's initial shot hit the crossbar and Poelstra was there to pot it home.
Swenson finished with nine saves on 11 shots on goal while Smither etched the win with a pair of saves.
North Dakota will close the regular season Sunday still battling for a spot in the upcoming Summit League championships. UND gets South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
