GRAND FORKS, N.D. --Â There's a reason why the Ottawa Senators selected
Jacob Bernard-Docker in the first round of June's NHL entry draft.
The University of North Dakota freshman defenseman from Canmore, Alberta, threaded a point wrist shot through traffic and past the right shoulder of Wisconsin goalie Daniel Lebedeff 21 seconds into overtime Saturday night on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Fighting Hawks a 3-2 win over the Badgers and a sweep of the weekend series.
It was his second goal in two nights against Wisconsin. This one came after UND had gone 0-for-8 on the power play before the 18th shot of the night on a power play found net off Bernard-Docker's stick.
UND's fourth straight victory continued its recent mastery over Wisconsin. The Fighting Hawks are now 10-1-2 in their last 13 games against Wisconsin.
As a final tuneup before UND opens National Collegiate Hockey Conference play next weekend at Miami, this third straight win over a Big Ten Conference team served as a nice sendoff at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
UND coach
Brad Berry inserted Bernard-Docker at the point on the power play in the overtime session after UND managed just two shots on goal on the 5-on-3 power play over the last 89 seconds of regulation play.
"I just tried to take advantage of that opportunity,'' Bernard-Docker said. "When you get out there, you want to make the best of it. I think I did that.''
And how.
UND got the opening when Wisconsin's Josh Ess and Tyler Inamoto were called on minor penalties 16 seconds apart late in the third period. And after being stymied by Wisconsin's shot-blocking defense (25 blocked shots) and goaltending, the drought on the power play ended when Bernard-Docker used Badger defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk as a partial screen to thread his high shot past the Finland rookie Lebedeff.
"It was huge,'' Berry said of the win. "Obviously we had lot of opportunity tonight on the power play to get a goal or two,'' Berry said. "It took us until overtime to do it. It was a big test for us.
"We got some looks on the 5-on-3 at the end of the game, but they weren't good looks, We were standing around, we were stagnant a little bit,'' Berry said. "Fresh bodies is a big thing when you play two games in two nights in a high impactful game like this. I thought JBD scored a heckuva goal Friday night, and obviously it was kind of the same thing tonight."
And Bernard-Docker, fresh off the bench heading into overtime, was patient enough with the puck to find the small opening to end a battle in which UND outshot the Badgers 35-23. UND got 21 saves from rookie goalie
Adam Scheel as he continued his stout play in winning his fourth straight start as UND improved to 4-2-1 overall.
"He's got poise,'' Berry said of JBD. "For a young guy, he's got some poise He's got a good shot, too. He knows what that next play is.''
UND needed a big goal on a partial breakaway by senior
Nick Jones at 3:49 of the third period to tie it at 2-2. He took a lead pass through the center zone from defenseman
Gabe Bast, shielded the puck from a defenseman on his hip, and beat Lebedeff 5-hole as he cut from left to right across the crease. His goal came 30 seconds after Wisconsin had taken a 2-1 lead on Tarek Baker's deflection of a point shot.
Earlier, Wisconsin's Will Johnson scored on a goal-mouth deflection on UW's first shot on goal at 4:48 of the first period, but UND's
Grant Mismash tied it at 1:21 of the second period. He stripped Badger defenseman Ess -- one of his best friends -- in the Badger defensive zone and whipped a wrist shot glove side on Lebedeff for a 1-1 tie.
Later, Jones tied it and JBD won it just as the front half of the 5-on-3 expired.
Jones played a major role in the victory, besides delivering his first goal of the season. He won 18 of 20 faceoffs, an unbelievable number, compared to UW's Baker, who lost 15 of 16 draws. "We've got the group here that's pretty resilient,'' Jones said. "We know we're going to win games. We go into the third period knowing we're going to find a way to get it done. I think that's a little bit of a difference from last year.''
Game notes: Bernard-Docker, Lebedeff and Jones were named the game's three stars by the media, in that order . . .
