Milwaukee downs North Dakota in home opener

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Visiting Milwaukee held North Dakota to 23.5 percent shooting from the floor on the way to a 64-46 road win at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center Friday afternoon in non-conference action. The Panthers connected on triples on three straight possessions late in the opening half to help erase an early eight-point Fighting Hawk lead and never looked back.

Senior Lexi Klabo was limited to just one field goal, scoring 14 points and grabbing just two rebounds with bodies draped all over her all afternoon long. Jill Morton added eight points while Jaclyn Jarnot had six points and a team-high six boards off the bench in 20 minutes of play.

The Fighting Hawks (2-6) got out to a quick a start, grabbing an 8-1 advantage by holding Milwaukee (4-5) without a field goal until the midway point of the first quarter. The Panthers embarked on a 11-1 run to take their first lead early in the second stanza.

With the score 19-all in the final three minutes of the half, a three by Alyssa Fischer then two more by Lizzie Odegard on three straight trips gave the advantage to Milwaukee.

Two more Milwaukee threes to start the second half made it a lead of a dozen. All told, it was an 8-for-19 effort from deep for the Panthers to help them maintain a double-digit lead in the final frame.

Megan Walstad scored 15 and grabbed seven rebounds and Jamie Reit added  12 points, six rebounds and four steals off the bench.

North Dakota (2-6) heads to Iowa State Sunday for a tilt with the Cyclones.
