Swenson backstops UND to scoreless draw with Montana

Fighting Hawks remain undefeated, extend shutout streak to 380 minutes to begin season

MISSOULA, Mont. – After picking up the first win in program history over Idaho just 48 hours ago, the University of North Dakota soccer team crossed off another first on Sunday with a 0-0 draw at Montana to close out the Montana Invitational in Missoula.

The scoreless draw marks the first positive result for the Fighting Hawks (3-0-1) on the road against the Griz (1-3-1), having dropped their previous six contests in Missoula, and keeps UND undefeated through four matches for only the fifth time in program history.

"Today was tough against a great Montana team," said Head Coach Chris Logan. "We fought hard and with a little bit more luck at the end could have been given a penalty kick to win it; however, I think a tie overall is a fair result."

Olivia Swenson was flawless again for the visitors, turning in her finest performance of the season. The senior made a game-high eight saves, including a sparkling stop in overtime to keep the game scoreless. Swenson has still not allowed a goal on the season and has helped the Fighting Hawks extend their shutout streak to 380 minutes.

"Swenson made one outstanding save and they also hit the post, while Katie Moller and Emma Bangert had chances for our team," said Logan. "Overall, I'm happy with the weekend as we played two very good, well coached teams and came away without any losses!"

Montana controlled the pace for a majority of the first half, testing Swenson and the backline early. In the 24th minute, the Griz nearly broke the deadlock when McKenzie Warren worked her way into a dangerous scoring area and fired a shot off the post before the senior goalkeeper made another stop just moments later following a corner to keep the hosts off the board.

UND started to press on offense following the halftime break, turning its first shot on goal into a dangerous scoring opportunity. Bangert blistered a shot towards the cage and forced the Griz goalkeeper to make a fine save. With the pace really opening up, Montana nearly took the lead minutes later when a shot ricocheted off the crossbar and over the net to send the match into overtime scoreless.

In the opening extra session, the Griz had the first opportunity to end the game when Warren sent one towards goal off a volley but Swenson made a fantastic, left handed save to deflect the ball over the net and send the match further along. Just five minutes later Bangert had the best look for the Fighting Hawks in the opening ten minutes of OT, but again was denied and the teams moved to another session.

UND had possession for much of the final 10 minutes of action, collecting both opportunities during the stanza. Moller had a look from inside the box, but her shot was blocked and Olivia Geiwitz's shot at the buzzer just went wide as the clubs had to settle for a draw.

North Dakota finally returns to its home field this weekend with a pair of contests against local foes. The Fighting Hawks will host Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday and Bemidji State on Sunday from East Grand Forks Senior High School.

NOTES: UND extends its shutout streak to 380:00 minutes, the longest in the DI era and second longest in program history … Swenson's clean sheet was the seventh of her career, matching Beth Gilyard's (2001) mark for fourth all-time at UND … Chris Logan moves to 5-3-4 in nonconference play at UND.
