OMAHA, Neb.-- Jackson Keane's goal with under two minutes left broke a 3-3 tie and gave visiting North Dakota a 4-3 win over host Omaha in NCHC play Friday evening at Baxter Arena. UND (12-9-1, 6-5-0 NCHC) again took a two-goal lead only to have it evaporate and have to claw back to win it late.
"The good thing about it is that we found a way to get a third straight," UND head coach
Brad Berry said. "We've been there and done that with this group. From dominating the first two periods with shots and then not scoring on some of our opportunities. After they scored their third goal it didn't take us long to get back on the rails again and playing on their end of the rink and I think that shows a sign of a team that's calloused and has been there before. But, tonight means nothing if we don't get after it again tomorrow."
Matt Kiersted got No. 20 North Dakota on the board early, finding the back of the net just 2:40 into the game and UND appeared off to the races. After a UND faceoff win, one of its 16 in 19 chances in the first period, Kiersted fired a wrister from the top of the left circle for his fifth goal of the season and the all-important first lead for the Fighting Hawks.
Omaha would answer quickly, however, using a power play to tie the score fewer than two minutes later. Zach Jordan snuck one past
Adam Scheel at the 4:26 mark to make it 1-1 as the Mavs got two of their three goals on power-play opportunities.
Later, Kiersted later helped thwart an odd-man rush with a diving stop as Omaha never got a shot off on the break and UND piled up a 12-4 edge in shots on goal in the first frame.
North Dakota got a goal on its first power play opportunity as well, as
Nick Jones scored his third on the man advantage in the last four games to wrestle away the lead midway through the first. Jones got a couple cracks in a front on the rebound from
Jacob Bernard-Docker's shot on net, burying the second chance five-hole past Evan Weninger.
Jasper Weatherby tallied his second goal of the season at 3:40 of the second period to make it 3-1, but that lead would be short-lived. Omaha rallied to tie the score early in the third until Keane got the game-winner with just 1:50 to go.
Adam Scheel later stopped a breakaway and then had another big stop at point-blank range in the final seconds to seal the win and give him his 11th win of the season in UND's third straight one-goal win.
The teams conclude the series Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
