North Dakota rolls past Carleton, 8-1, in season opener

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Opening up the 2019 spring campaign, the University of North Dakota women's tennis team rolled to an 8-1 triumph over Carleton College on Saturday afternoon in Lakeville, Minn.

The Fighting Hawks (1-0) won eight of the nine matches contested, and dropped only two sets in the contest to capture their first victory of the season.

On the doubles courts, the top pairing of Kaede Amano and Preethi Kasilingam cruised to an 8-0 victory before the No. 3 duo of Isa Sullivan and Masha Lobanova also collected an 8-0 triumph to set the tone for the remainder of the match. UND capped off the sweep of two-person play with an 8-2 win by Zahra Finnigan and Allie Ochotorena at the No. 2 spot to carry a 3-0 advantage into singles play.

Lobanova kept up the momentum on the singles court with a quick pair of 6-0 wins to move the score to 4-0 in favor of the visitors. UND kept dominating the bottom courts as Finnigan rolled to back-to-back 6-1 victories as the Fighting Hawks clinched the overall win with their fifth point of the day.

On the top courts, Amano, who was named a Summit League Player to Watch last week, battled to a 6-3 win in the opening set before kicking into second gear with a 6-1 triumph to polish off the sixth win of the day for UND. Sullivan echoed her teammate on the No. 2 court with a 6-3, 6-0 win before Ochotorena rallied for a 7-6 victory in the first set and a 6-1 triumph in the second for the final win of the afternoon for the Hawks.

Carleton won its lone singles match of the day on the No. 3 court, as UND collected the 8-1 win.

North Dakota returns to action tomorrow morning with a showdown against Northern Iowa at 10 a.m. in Cedar Falls.
