Griffs survive UND's third-period onslaught to etch 3-1 win

BUFFALO, N.Y.-- Canisius College took advantage of a slow UND start and cashed in two goals in the third period en route to its first-ever win over North Dakota, 3-1, Friday evening in non-conference play at HARBORCENTER. UND freshman Mark Senden's short-handed goal in the second period tied the score at 1-1, but the Golden Griffins were able to push back ahead early in the third and withstood a UND pushback to hang on.

"The bottom line is, you've got to start earlier," UND head coach Brad Berry said. "We didn't get a shot until eight or nine minutes into the first period and that's too late. We've got to capitalize, we had five power plays and we've got to get at least one on the power play. We ended up trying to press a little bit there in the third period and they get an out-numbered chance and they score on it. We only gave up 14 shots, but you can't give up the quality shots like we did on that second goal."

UND (9-8-1 overall) out-shot the home team, 33-14, with 17 of those coming in the final period alone for the FIghting Hawks. Canisius (7-9-2) was able to cash in on a power-play opportunity late in the first period to go into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Matt Hoover missed a wide-open net chance on the Griffs' first power play midway through the first period but whistled one high over Adam Scheel to keep it scoreless but the second man advantage provided a lead for Canisius. David Parrottino redirected a point shot from Dylan McLaughlin and through the five hole of Scheel for a 1-0 lead at 18:21 of the first period.

North Dakota finally got its first man advantage in the second period, in fact, got three of them in that frame alone but none were fruitful. Collin Adams had the Fighting Hawks' best chance as his redirect in front was gloved by Blake Weyrick. UND finally got on the board with the special teams unit, but it was on the penalty kill. Senden charged the net with a flurry of shots before finally solving Weyrick to tie the score.

It stayed there until early in the third when Cameron Heath tallied a goal at the 1:40 mark for a 2-1 edge. Canisius then hung on for dear life as UND peppered Weyrick with 17 shots on goal in that period and adding a pair of shots off the post trying to equalize. Senden rang one off the far pipe midway through the frame then four minutes later Dixon Bowen had one go off the pipe in traffic.

Grant Meyer scored an empty netter with seven seconds to go to seal it, their first-ever win over UND in eight chances, dating back to 2002.

The teams wrap up the series Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Central.
