Notes: Canisius series opens regular season

Complete UND game notes (pdf)

THIS WEEKEND
North Dakota opens the regular season with a home series against Canisius. Next week sees UND make its first road trip, a series at third-ranked Minnesota State.

BROADCAST INFORMATION
This weekend's games will both be telecast live on Midco Sports Network, the primary TV home of North Dakota hockey. Alex Heinert does the play-by-play, with former UND goalie Jake Brandt handling the color analysis with Katie Hale as the rinkside reporter. The series will also be available via streaming at NCHC.tv.

All UND men's hockey games, home and away, can be heard on stations across the UND Sports Home of Economy Radio Network, as well as through the iHeart Radio app. The flagship station for the network is 96.1 FM (The Fox). Longtime broadcaster Tim Hennessy, in his 41st season as the voice of UND men's hockey, calls the action while Steve Olson provides color analysis.

LAST TIME OUT
North Dakota used three goals in a four-minute span late in the first period to seize control in a 5-1 exhibition win over Manitoba on Saturday. Grant Mismash assisted only each of UND's first four goals, Gavin Hain had a pair of goals and North Dakota was a tidy 3-of-7 in power play chances. The Fighting Hawks outshot the Bisons, 49-12.

SEASON OPENERS
North Dakota is 2-1-1 in season-opening games under Coach Berry. Last season, UND dropped a 2-1 decision at Bemidji State before opening the home schedule with a1-1 tie the following night.

LAST MEETINGS BETWEEN THESE TEAMS:
Canisius swept UND in Buffalo, N.Y., by 3-1 and 2-1 scores on Jan. 4-5, 2019. The Golden Griffins were outshot badly on each night with UND holding the edge, 33-14, on Friday and 49-16 on Saturday. North Dakota had a season-high 23 shots on goal in the first period alone Saturday, but it produced just one power-play goal as the Griffs escaped with the win.

POLL POSITION
UND remained at No. 18 in the Oct. 7 USCHO.com poll. North Dakota was outside the top 15, receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll for the second straight week.

STRONG NCHC FLAVOR IN THE POLLS
Six of the eight NCHC teams are ranked or receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll this week. Two-time defending national champion Minnesota Duluth tops the poll with Denver second and St. Cloud State seventh. Western Michigan sits 14th with North Dakota at 18. Colorado College is receiving votes in the first poll of the regular season.

GAVIN HAVIN A COUPLE
Sophomore Gavin Hain scored twice in Saturday's 5-1 exhibition win over Manitoba. Hain scored both of UND's even-strength goals in the win as North Dakota turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead in a four-minute stretch in the first and then Hain's second-period goal to make it 4-1.

WEATHERBY FORECAST
Sophomore Jasper Weatherby won 56.5 percent of his faceoff draws as a rookie last season, just trailing Rhett Gardner (62.3) and Nick Jones (56.7) among players with more than 100 opportunities. He'll get plenty more of those this season with those players lost to graduation. The San Jose Sharks draft pick won 11 of his 15 draws Saturday against Manitoba.

FEENEY FRENZY
Freshman Harrison Feeney stopped all four shots he faced in his first collegiate action in the 5-1 exhibition win against Manitoba. He also stoned a penalty shot, working a flawless second period in UND's convincing win.

MICHAUD ON THE POWER PLAY
Senior transfer Westin Michaud goes into his final collegiate season with 29 goals, 14 of those coming on the power play. UND's other forwards have combined for 14 PPG in their respective careers.
