TULSA, Okla. – After winning the second and third sets, the University of North Dakota held off Oral Roberts at the Aerobics Center Friday night as the Fighting Hawks won in five sets, 26-28, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 15-12. UND is now 3-0 in five sets matches.
Senior
Ashley Brueggeman posted career-highs in kills (23), points (26), and digs (22) while adding two service aces and two blocks.
Lexi Ahrens and
Lydia Rutten all registered double figure kills with 13 and 11, respectively, while Rutten also recorded a team-best .391 hitting percentage. Rutten also totaled two service aces in the match. Running the offense for the Fighting Hawks,
Julia Vetter posted a career-best 50 assists, the most by a UND player this season.
"Tonight was a great team win," said Head Coach
Jeremiah Tiffin, "to do what we did on the road is that much better too. We played with a fire tonight and did a great job of coming back in that final set. We had some key plays at key moments and we stepped up when we needed to and for that I couldn't be prouder of this team."
Down in 8-11 in the fifth set,
Sara Antic stepped to the service line following a dump kill by
Julia Vetter. The junior served up a 5-0 rally for the Fighting Hawks, forcing three Golden Eagle service errors, and capping the run with Brueggeman's 23rd kill to give the Fighting Hawks a 13-11 lead.
North Dakota finished the match with a .253 hitting percentage, hitting over .300 in the second, third and fifth set. The Fighting Hawks impressively posted an average of .400 in the second set with 16 kills and 2 errors.
The victory improved North Dakota to 10-11 and 2-5 in The Summit League while Oral Roberts fell to 6-14 and 4-3 in conference.
UND will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 22 against Denver at 1 p.m.
