Omaha withstands UND rallies in final two sets en route to win

GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Omaha overcame a valiant North Dakota comeback attempt on the way to a 25-14, 25-23, 25-20 win in Summit League play Saturday morning at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Mavs hit efficiently in the first then had to fend off UND rallies in the second and third sets to escape with the win.

"We served together late and we changed our blocking just a bit, but execution things at the ends of sets hurt us," UND head coach Jeremiah Tiffin said. "I though the girls adjusted well to what they were doing, but we didn't clean it up enough on all the other stuff to make a difference in the end."

Omaha (12-11, 5-4 Summit) came out clicking in the first set, jumping out to an 11-4 edge and never looking back on the way to a 25-14 victory. The Mavs hit .514 in that frame with 20 kills and just a pair of attack errors.

In the second, it was a much more back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than three points with 11 tie scores and six lead changes. With the score 16-16, Taylor Riedl finished one of her six kills to jumpstart a quick spurt that saw UND take a 20-17 lead. Following an Omaha timeout, the Mavericks were able to re-tie the score at 22-22 and then a Sadie Limback service ace helped boost Omaha to a 25-23 win and a two-sets-to-none lead in the match.

The third set played out much differently than the other two, at least early. It was 6-1 North Dakota quickly with back-to-back service aces from Darian Chwialkowski the final two points in that run. Omaha called a timeout and got a sideout but another run behind the service of Madi Hart forced Omaha to burn through its second timeout as well with the visitors trailing, 11-4.

The Mavs were able to turn the tables, immediately going on a five-point run to close the score within two. UND would again re-stretch the advantage to a seven at 17-10 on a Lydia Rutten kill. Limback had three of the kills in an Omaha 6-1 run, then her kill to make it 20-17 North Dakota fueled a set-ending 9-0 spurt that pushed the Mavs to the finish line for a 25-20 victory and the sweep.

Omaha hit .368 in the win, led by Limback's match-high 13 kills.

Ashley Brueggeman paced the Fighting Hawks' offense with nine kills wh8le Rutten added eight and Peyton Sewell had 30 assists. Chwialkowski finished with 12 digs and three aces.

North Dakota continues its homestand Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first serve against Summit-leading and conference-undefeated South Dakota.
