Hawks Battle with Dons in Three-Set Nailbiter

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota closed Homecoming weekend with a three-set loss to Purdue Fort Wayne, 23-25, 20-25, 22-25. The Fighting Hawks and Mastodons equaled each other's hitting percentage at .210 while UND also amassed nine blocks.

"We didn't play a complete set today and credit to Purdue Fort Wayne to finishing each time they needed to," said Head Coach Jeremiah Tiffin. "We had to change some things up this afternoon with Peyton (Sewell) coming out, but we showed some good things in the match; we just couldn't finish."

Ashley Brueggeman led all attackers with 13 kills with a .333 hitting percentage while Lexi Ahrens hit an impressive .647 hitting percentage while tallying 12 kills.

North Dakota outhit PFW in the first set .282-.250 as it rallied late to try and push the Mastodons to the brink. The Hawks did the same in the second set, but Purdue Fort Wayne responded again.

With Peyton Sewell coming out early in the second set, the Mastodons worked early to push the Hawks out of their system in the third set as they continued to attack setter Julia Vetter, who responded with digs when called upon. UND held the ship despite playing out of rhythm to keep itself within striking distance.

An 8-2 run by UND halfway through the frame paved the way to a 12-5 run that put the Hawks on top, 20-17. With both teams extinguishing their timeouts, Purdue Fort Wayne came back to down UND in the set as it finished with an 8-2 run of its own to sweep the match in three sets.

Both teams improved to 9-9 on the season while UND fell to 1-3 in Summit League. Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 2-2 in the conference.

The University of North Dakota will return to action Oct. 11 when it hosts Denver at 3 p.m.
