GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Pulling down a program-record 72 rebounds and boasting a 53.5 field goal percentage on 86 attempts, the University of North Dakota defeated Division III Northland College, 118-35. Eight different players scored in double figures, including six of its eight freshmen.
The 83-point margin of victory was the program's largest since defeating Mayville State by 90 (131-41) on Nov. 25, 1997. Three Fighting Hawks -
Jaclyn Jarnot,
Olivia Lane, and
Megan Zander - recorded double-doubles as UND broke the program record for rebounds set Feb. 7, 1997, against Minnesota State.
"(Tonight) was good minutes for our players that don't play a lot, and it was a great opportunity for us to work our offense and work on our skill sets," said Head Coach
Travis Brewster. "It was a game, and we had to be able to carry some things we talked about in practice into a game situation. This game was not about finishing second to ourselves. We had to call some timeouts at the end of the first half, but I was very proud that we figured it out together."
The North Dakota bench accounted for 80 points as all 12 of the Fighting Hawks that stepped onto the floor scored, paced by Zander (18) and Lane (14). UND also made 46 field goals in the contest, dishing assists on 31 of those attempts.
Alaina Jarnot distributed a season-high nine helpers in only 12 minutes on the floor.
Jumping out to a 25-10 lead after the first period, the Hawks outscored the LumberJills by 27 points in the second quarter (32-5) to build a 57-15 lead. North Dakota accounted for 40 of its 72 rebounds in the first half.
The Fighting Hawks held the Jills to 15-of-70 shooting, including a 2-of-23 clip behind the arc. UND also held Northland to single-digits scoring in the final period as the Hawks finished the period, 30-7, to build their 83-point margin.
While its 72 boards signaled dominance under the basket, North Dakota also finished with 64 points in the paint and registered 11 blocks as well.
Melissa Leet, who made her first career start, finished eight points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
The University of North Dakota will head to South Carolina for its Thanksgiving trip, taking on South Carolina State and Charleston Southern on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30, respectively.
