TUSCON, Ariz. - The University of North Dakota opened the season at the reigning WNIT Champion Arizona to face a seasoned Wildcats squad, matching the Pac-12 foe physically on the glass in a 74-42 loss. As a team, UND amassed 39 rebounds to the Arizona's 40.
"I was proud of this team and how they played tonight; they got better," said Head Coach
Travis Brewster. "Our players matched up physically with a team that's been considered a top-20 program by some pundits and receiving votes in the AP and Coaches Poll. We responded after timeouts and showed a pride for who we are and what we stand for and from a young team, I couldn't ask for more."
Jaclyn Jarnot led the Fighting Hawk scorers with 11 points, going a perfect 4-of-4 from the field with three makes behind the arc. Leet also added seven points and four blocks, while
Lilly Keplin scored nine points in her collegiate debut.
North Dakota trailed the the Wildcats by 18 at the half but hung tight for a majority of the half as it ended the opening period down by seven points, 17-10.
In the battle of the glass, UND and the Wildcats each tallied 20 rebounds with Leet leading all rebounders in the opening half with five.
Despite causing 27 North Dakota turnovers, the Wildcats only accounted for 22 points off of turnovers and only 10 points via fast break baskets in transition.
The Fighting Hawks were +8 in scoring from the first half to the second half and outscored the Wildcats bench, 20-19.
North Dakota will follow up with one more game in Arizona when it heads to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon Friday, Nov. 8. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. Central.
