Betty records fall in again in 109-50 rout over Northland College

Six players reach double figures; Hawks move to 3-0 at home

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Despite the cold weather outside, the 1,091 fans in attendance at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center had to leave with a warm feeling after North Dakota routed Northland College, 109-50, on Tuesday evening to complete a 3-0 home mark in non-conference play.

For the second straight home game, UND (5-7) set Betty records as the Fighting Hawks continued their hot play on their home floor. The green and white matched the program and Betty record for three pointers in a game with 16, tying the marks set against NJIT in 2010 and vs. Augustana in 1996, connecting on 33 tries from distance for a 48.5% clip.

Overall, UND hit 45-of-70 from the field, breaking the arena's record of 43 in 2011 against Montana for field goals made. While the 64.3% from the field was not a program record, it was the best on the season and the second time the Hawks have crossed the 60-percent plateau this season. Of those 45 makes, 33 of them came off an assist to obliterate the previous Betty record of 26 vs. Sacramento State in 2016 and finish just two off the program record set in 1979 vs. North Dakota State.

Six players reached double figures in the win for UND for the first time since the Big Sky Conference Tournament title game vs. Weber State in 2017, led by Billy Brown's 17. The senior, who had struggled offensively to start the season, erupted for a 6-for-10 night from the field, including a game-high five triples, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals in 22 minutes of action to finish a game-high +40.

Marlon Stewart had it going in all facets of the game on the offensive side of the ball, posting the second double-double of his career and the ninth by a UND player this season. The Rock Island, Ill., native scored 14 points and dished out 11 assists while adding six boards and a steal.

Kienan Walter made it back-to-back games in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. De'Sean Allen-Eikens was the fourth starter with 10+ points, scoring 12 on 50% shooting from the field for his 10th game in double figures this season. Gertautas Urbonavicius and Bentiu Panoam were the final Fighting Hawks in double figures, each coming off the bench to strike for 12 and 10, respectively, in the win. Each did their damage with the dunk, combining for five of UND's 10 dunks on the evening.

Turnovers have plagued the hosts in a majority of contests; however, Tuesday was a different story. UND finished with with only six, while forcing Northland (3-8) into 12 giveaways. The Hawks also built on their rebounding margin, winning the battle on the boards 45-24.

The shot from distance helped get the Fighting Hawks off to a strong start early, connecting on three of their first five tries from distance to quickly build an 11-4 lead just four minutes into the contest. Stewart and Brown helped UND keep its foot on the gas in the first half, each draining shot-after-shot from beyond-the-arc to stretch the advantage to 16, 27-11, just before the halfway point of the first half.

After the Lumberjacks chipped the lead down to 14, UND stretched the lead out once again thanks to Allen-Eikens and Urbonavicius. The duo combined to score the next 10 points for the Hawks to give the hosts a 24-point advantage, 45-21, entering the final stretch of the opening stanza.

Panoam ended the half with a dunk in transition following a steal and dish from Walter to send UND to the locker room with a 54-23 lead at the break.

The Hawks did not slow down as the ensuing 20 minutes began, striking for 13 of the half's first 18 points to force an early Northland timeout and a 67-28 lead. The run was led by triples from Stewart and Brown, as well as a dunk from Rebraca to bring the Betty crowd to its feet.

As the lead grew bigger, the hosts began to have more fun. Panoam and Ethan Igbanugo began to put on their own dunk contest at the Betty, capped off by an emphatic, alley-oop slam from Panoam off a dish from Davids Atelbauers to put the finishing touches on a 109-50 victory.

North Dakota will hit the road for its final game before the Christmas break, taking on Nebraska on Saturday at 5 p.m. Fans can catch the game on Big Ten Network Plus and the Home of Economy Radio Network.
