GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Three Fighting Hawks scored in double figures against Mayville State (9-2) in North Dakota's (8-3) 2019 finale at The Betty as UND downed the Comets, 83-52. The University of North Dakota finished with 32 field goals, shooting 42.7 percent from the field.
Olivia Lane led the Hawks with 17 points and eight rebounds.
"It's a game of intensity, and I thought we lacked it in the first half," said Head Coach
Travis Brewster, "we came out in the second half and picked it up. It's finals week, and that was part of it tonight. With a young team trying to work through those things, I can't say that I'm disappointed in them because I'm not, but these are teaching moments as we move forward."
After opening the first period with a 27-percent clip from the field, North Dakota shot a combined 19-for-36 in the second and third periods to record a 52.8 percent shooting percentage. That included an 8-for-11 start in the third quarter that also featured an 11-2 run in the first 1:31 of the second half.
While Lane active in the post, finishing 8-of-9 from the field to help North Dakota scored 34 points in the paint, classmate
Maggie Manson registered 14 points as she finished 4-of-10 behind the arc.
Julia Fleecs paced the Hawks starters with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. UND's performance tonight resulted in the program's final win of the first full decade at The Betty, giving the University of North Dakota a 98-40 overall record since January 1, 2010 in Grand Forks.
Mayville State, the 21st ranked team in NAIA Division II, did not back down from the challenge against the Fighting Hawks as it only finished -5 on the glass and went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter to close the gap to three points, 21-18. The Comets also had three players in double figures and were paced by Kylee Heurung's 16.
