MOBILE, Ala. – The University of North Dakota softball team concluded the Jaguar Classic on Sunday with a 13-4 loss to Tulsa in Mobile, Ala.
Â
Tulsa (7-3) struck for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 advantage. From there, the Golden Hurricane held off the Fighting Hawks (2-8) to conclude a perfect weekend at the tournament.
Â
Marina Marzolino had a strong day at the plate for the Fighting Hawks, tallying a trio of hits in four at-bats, driving in a run, and scoring herself in the losing effort.
Victoria Minor also reached base three times for UND with a hit and two walks.
Â
UND used three pitchers in the contest, as
Nikki Pica made the start before being relieved by
Emily Rosas and
Angeline Riley. Pica worked 3.2 innings of seven-hit, four-run ball, while also striking out a pair as the senior was saddled with her fourth loss of the season.
Â
North Dakota took the early lead after
Deja Miller picked up where she left off last night, smacking a leadoff triple to immediately put the Fighting Hawks in scoring position. Marzolino brought Miller home with a perfectly placed bunt up the third base line to give UND a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.
Â
After Tulsa tied the game in the top of the second, UND was able to climb back in front in the third. Following back-to-back singles by Marzolino and
Dani Romero to start the inning, an error on an attempted double play by Tulsa off the bat of
Angel Love allowed Marzolino to score from second on the play and restore the one-run advantage for the Hawks.
Â
The Golden Hurricane responded with a huge next half inning, striking for five runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead after four. After a two-run home run to take a 3-2 advantage, Tulsa added another pair following back-to-back hit batters with the bases loaded and a sixth on a bases-loaded walk to build the lead.
Â
Tulsa added another seven runs over the final three frames to push the advantage to 13-2; however,
Lexi Mayhood drove a run home after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Lyndsay Hathaway followed with an RBI single to plate the final two runs of the day for UND.
Â
North Dakota returns to action next Friday with a trip to Phoenix, Ariz. for the GCU Purple Classic hosted by Grand Canyon University.
