Saturdays are for sweeps: UND rolls to pair of victories on Saturday

UND defeats Mount St. Mary’s and Stetson to move to 3-1 at Stetson Hatter Classic

DELAND, Fla. – North Dakota just keeps on rolling. The Fighting Hawks softball team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 11-2, to open Saturday's action before defeating Stetson, 6-3, for the second time this weekend to collect a sweep in the Stetson Hatter Classic from DeLand, Fla.

UND (8-10) collected its sixth win over the last eight games and have won three straight games for the first time this season. The Fighting Hawks have also scored 26 runs and allowed only nine in those three victories.

North Dakota 11, Mount St. Mary's 2
UND struck for 11 runs over four innings to roll to an 11-2 triumph over Mount St. Mary's in five innings of action to open Saturday's slate in DeLand.

The Hawks tallied multiple runs in each of the first four frames, including a five-run fourth to blow the game wide open. Marlina Marzolino was perfect at the plate in the win, finishing 3-for-3 with a trio of RBIs and scoring a run to pace UND's 14 hits on the afternoon.

Dani Romero matched her teammate with three RBIs, while Deja Miller and Lyndsay Hathaway each recorded two RBIs, and Victoria Minor tallied one.

Five players notched multi-hit games, led by Marzolino and Miller's three-hit days. Angel Love, Minor, and Romero also recorded a pair of hits while Jocelyn Kirk and Lexi Mayhood also reached twice with a hit and walk.

Jannay Jones received a ton of run support, but the freshman was still strong in the circle for the Fighting Hawks to collect her fourth win of the season. Jones threw all five innings, surrendering only five hits and two runs while striking out and walking one.

It didn't take long for UND to grab the lead, needing only three batters to take a 1-0 lead. After Miller led off the inning with a single and Kirk followed with a double of the first two pitches of the game, Marzolino drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 UND. Moments later, Romero ripped a double to left center to bring home Kirk and give the Hawks a 2-0 lead after just a half inning.

After the Mountaineers struck back for a run in the bottom of the frame, UND added two more runs in the top of the second as Marzolino plated her second and third runs of the game with a double to left field to make it 4-1 UND. Hathaway joined the fun in the top of the third with a single up the middle to bring another pair of runs home, this time with two outs, pushing the lead to 6-1 Hawks after three.

Mount St. Mary's added a second run in the bottom of the third, but UND put the final nails in the coffin with a five-run top of the fourth. After a Marzolino single with one away, Romero launched a 3-1 pitch to left field for her second round tripper of the season and gave UND an 8-2 lead. Minor and Miller also recorded RBI singles in the frame, pushing the Hawks over double digits in runs for the first time this season.

Jones did not allow a hit over the next two innings as UND rolled to the 11-2 triumph.

North Dakota 6, Stetson 3
It was late-inning offense again for UND, as the Fighting Hawks tallied four runs in the final three innings to rally past Stetson, 6-3, for the second time in as many days.

Romero was huge at the plate again for the Hawks, tallying a pair of hits, including what would be the game-winning homer, driving in two, and earning a walk to reach three times in the contest.

UND recorded 13 hits in the win, led by Minor's three-hit day. The junior finished with a trio of knocks, two RBIs, and a run scored to lead the Hawks to the victory.

Despite her shutout streak coming to an end, Emily Rosas tamed the Hatters for the second straight game to earn back-to-back wins in the circle. The freshman tossed six innings of six-hit, three-run (two earned) ball where she stuck out two and walked four. Jones locked down the victory in the seventh for her second save of the season.

Stetson struck first in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, but Rosas did a nice job limiting the damage to just one by getting a fielder's choice, strikeout, and ground out to end the threat. UND took the lead in next half inning, with Love and Alicia Young coming around to score on an RBI double by Minor to left field.

After the Hatters tied the game in the bottom of the second, the pitchers and defense settled in over the next few frames as neither side was able to get any runs across. UND finally broke the 2-2 deadlock in the top of the fifth as Romero doubled again, this time to left center, to score Jailene Carpio all the way from first and push the Hawks in front, 3-2. The visitors nearly added on in the frame, loading the bases with two outs, but a fly out to deep left ended the stanza.

Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth thanks to a double play and a scoreless sixth, UND opened the seventh with back-to-back jacks from Romero and Love to extend the lead to 5-2. The shot by Romero was her second of the day and third of the season to tie Kirk for the team lead. Kayleen Schneider brought home Minor as the sixth run of the night with an RBI double to left center before UND closed out the win in the bottom of the seventh to seal the sweep.

North Dakota closes out the Stetson Hatter Classic on Sunday morning vs. Mount St. Mary's at 9 a.m. in DeLand, Fla.
