UND comeback falls just short in Summit League Semifinals

Fighting Hawks drop 4-2 decision to Omaha

TULSA, Okla. -- In heartbreaking fashion, the No. 2 seed University of North Dakota women's tennis team fell to No. 3 Omaha, 4-2, in the Summit League Championship Semifinals on Friday afternoon in Tulsa.

The Fighting Hawks (12-11), who were making their debut in the postseason tournament, nearly rallied from a deficit, but the Mavericks (7-17) were able to hold off second-seeded UND with back-to-back wins in three sets.

Just like in the previous meeting between the two sides earlier this year, Omaha grabbed the doubles point with victories on the top two courts to carry a 1-0 lead into singles action. On the No. 3 position, Zahra Finnigan and Isa Sullivan were holding a 6-5 lead when play was halted.

In singles play, Kaede Amano quickly brought the green and white to level with a 6-2, 6-3 win on the No. 2 court before Omaha jumped back in front with a triumph at the third position. The back-and-forth affair continued at the No. 6 court when Masha Lobanova held off her opponent, 6-3, 7-5, to once again tie the match, 2-2, heading to the final trio of contests.

With both teams needing a pair of victories in those final three matches, Omaha was able to hold on for back-to-back wins on the No. 4 and 5 courts to hold off the Fighting Hawks and claim the match. Sullivan was holding a lead once again at the top position, jumping in front 2-0 in the tiebreaking set when play was stopped.

North Dakota finishes the season with a 12-11 mark and 4-1 record in conference play, earning the No. 2 seed in postseason play and becoming the first UND team in the Summit to finish with a winning record in conference play.
