OMAHA -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team gave BIG EAST Conference foe Creighton everything it could handle, but the Bluejays came out victorious, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in Omaha.
With the loss, UND falls to 10-8 on the season and sees its winning streak come to an end at five consecutive matches.
After dropping the opening doubles match on the No. 3 court, the Fighting Hawks responded with back-to-back wins on the top two courts to capture the early point and take a 1-0 lead. The duo of
Lukas Buth and
Nejc Sitar evened doubles play up at one apiece with a 6-3 triumph from the No. 1 position before
Davide Callegari and
Johnnie Carmichael-Plester sealed the 1-0 advantage for the visitors with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 court.
Creighton won the first three matches in singles play to take a 3-1 lead, but Sitar picked up a clutch second point for the Hawks with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph on the top court to stop the run by the Bluejays. Buth knotted the match at three with a 7-5, 6-3 win of his own from third position to send all eyes to the No. 6 court with the match all square.
The Bluejays were able to hold on for the win, but not without a strong push by the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota returns to action tomorrow morning with a Summit League showdown at Omaha beginning at 11 a.m.
