VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of North Dakota fell in straight sets to South Dakota on Sunday afternoon (23-25, 13-25, 8-25), despite forcing 10 Coyote errors in the first set. USD amassed 48 kills and hit .340.
"Credit to South Dakota for their play today, they executed their game plan today," said Head Coach
Jeremiah Tiffin. "I liked the fight we had in the first set but we couldn't keep that energy going. We growing from this experience and it'll be good to be back home."
UND only committed three errors in the opening frame while totaling 12 kills. The Fighting Hawks forced the Coyotes into 10 errors in the set, giving North Dakota momentum at the end of the set with a 7-2 run to close the scoring gap to one point, 24-23. However, the Yotes would take the set, 25-23.
USD would bounce back in the final two sets, combining for five errors in 34 kills to post a hitting percentage over .400 in each of the final two frames.
While
Lexi Ahrens led the way in the first set with four kills and two blocks, it was Ashely Brueggeman that led the way in the final two sets as she closed the afternoon with six kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Ahrens finished the match with a team-best 6.5 points with five kills and three blocks.
McKenzie Damon closed the match with 10 digs from the back row while
Madi Hart added nine in support. Setters
Julia Vetter and
Peyton Sewell each added a service ace.
The Fighting Hawks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 when it hosts Western Illinois at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. First serve is set for 4 p.m. The match will broadcast live on Fox Sports North PLUS.
