SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Down two sets to nil after dropping the second set 25-7, the University of North Dakota volleyball team rallied to win the final three sets against Marist on Saturday morning to win in five, 23-25, 7-25, 25-15, 25-23, 15-13.
"I'm so proud of how this team fought back from down 2-0. To dig deep and win a three-hour match is something rare and I'm glad we got to experience it," said Head Coach
Jeremiah Tiffin.
Ashley Brueggeman and
Lydia Rutten combined for 27 kills while
Lexi Ahrens accounted for six blocks in her 2019 debut. Stephen, Minn., native
Abi McGlynn registered six kills, two aces and a block in her debut for the Fighting Hawks.
"I couldn't be happier for
Abi McGlynn, Coming off the bench in her freshman year and doing the things she did today helped us win. We got contributions from a lot of people, but Abi was huge for us," Tiffin added.
After a tightly contested first set that saw North Dakota fall by two points, 25-23, the second set was all Red Foxes as they hit .545 and held the Fighting Hawks to a -.167 clip to take the frame, 25-7.
UND began its summit of the comeback mountain as it held Marist to a negative hitting percentage (-.037) and hit .391 to take the third set, 25-15. The Red Foxes tested North Dakota in the fourth as both teams posted similar hitting percentages. However, errors in the set (9-4) allowed the Fighting Hawks to even the match, 25-23.
The Fighting Hawks swang aggressively in the final set, posting nine kills in 25 attempts while Marist only accounted for five kills in 14 attacks. North Dakota won the final set 15-13 as Rutten posted four kills in the last five points.
UND will close the trip in Rhode Island tomorrow when it takes on Brown in Providence, R.I. First serve is set for 11 a.m. The match will air live on ESPN+.
