North Dakota will exit NCHC pod in first place after 6-2 win in finale

OMAHA, Neb.-- Fourth-ranked North Dakota will leave the 10-game NCHC pod with the most conference points, winning its finale, 6-2, Sunday evening at Baxter Arena.

UND's (7-2-1) 20 league points are two more than Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State, who both claim 18 points with one fewer game. Omaha sits close behind with 16 points and the finale to play tomorrow vs. Colorado College.

The Fighting Hawks got a pair of goals from freshman Riese Gaber, part of a three-point night in the win.

The second period was a flurry of goals with five finding the back of the net and three unanswered by North Dakota to end the frame as UND pulled away.

Jasper Weatherby cashed in on North Dakota's first power play chance, firing a wrister past Ben Kraws to make it 1-0 just under five minutes into the game. Miami answered, however, exactly three minutes later on Jack Clements' first of the season and the first period ended tied, 1-1.

Freshman phenom Riese Gaber got a wild second period going with a goal 3:24 into the period. Freshman Griffin Ness fed Gaber trailing near the left circle and he blasted a laser past Kraws for another UND lead.

Again, Miami answered, this time 3:22 later with Matthew Barbolini's second tally of the season to make it 2-2. North Dakota then scored three goals before the end of that period to help put it away.

It started with Gaber's second of the night just 94 seconds after Miami had equalized it. Cooper Moore gained the zone along the near wall and found Gaber driving to the slot. His powerful shot went through Kraws' grasp and into the net for the eventual game-winner, Gaber's second of the young season.

Gaber assisted on the next goal as well, shooting from the high slot and Shane Pinto whacked it out of the air for his fifth goal of the season.

It was 5-2 later when UND has three or four Grade A chances and finally Collin Adams solved Kraws for his fourth goal of the season. Grant Mismash had the puck in the corner and fired a centering pass right to Adams, who patiently waited for Kraws to commit and beat him stickside.

Sophomore Ethan Frisch added the icing on the cake during a penalty kill with a short-handed tally. Mark Senden started the rush and left it for Frisch to go bar down for his second goal of the season and North Dakota's second short-handed tally on the year.

Adam Scheel picked up his sixth win in the pod, kicking aside 18 shots before giving way to sophomore Harrison Feeney to make his collegiate debut. Feeney played the final 3:33, including penalty kill and collected three saves.

North Dakota's next scheduled series is also slated for Baxter Arena as the Omaha Mavericks will play host to UND on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for the first of four games between the schools. The Fighting Hawks will open their home schedule the following weekend, Jan. 7-8 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
