Santa Clara defeats UND, 7-0, in Sunday finale

Fighting Hawks close weekend with 1-4 mark; 4-10 overall

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The University of North Dakota softball team fell, 7-0, to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon to close out the Silicon Valley Classic. The Fighting Hawks (4-10) finished the weekend with 1-4 mark in the tournament against a bevvy of tough programs from the Mountain West Conference and California.

It was early runs and strong pitching by Santa Clara that doomed the visitors, with the Broncos jumping out to an early 2-0 lead after one inning and UND registering only three hits. The Hawks put the ball in play, however, striking out only once in 24 at-bats, but were held off the scoreboard for the second time in the last three games.

Jannay Jones fired her fourth complete game of the season, but surrendered seven runs on eight hits and a walk to see her record fall to 1-6 on the year.

UND got runners aboard in the first three innings, with the best threat coming in the third on a pair of singles by Kawena Kalani and Angel Love, but couldn't get any runs home to head to the bottom of the frame trailing, 2-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Broncos loaded the bases with one out before a two-run double, RBI groundout, and an RBI single brought four runs and extended the advantage to 6-0 after three.

Santa Clara added a seventh run in the bottom of the sixth before shutting the door in the visiting half of the seventh to close out the 7-0 win.

North Dakota returns to California next weekend for the San Diego Classic beginning on Feb. 28 against CSUN at 11 a.m.
