Third Quarter Oral Roberts Surge Downs North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - After controlling the pace of the play and the score in the first half, the University of North Dakota (14-9, 5-5 Summit) was unable to rally back after an Oral Roberts third-quarter surge as the Golden Eagles (10-13, 5-5 Summit) downed the Fighting Hawks, 86-72.

"We didn't do a good enough job of keeping them off the free-throw line in the third quarter," said Head Coach Travis Brewster. "I thought we did a good job of executing our defense in the post during the first half, sagging enough to pressure on our double teams just enough, and we just didn't do that in the second half. You can't guard anyone at the free-throw line. We have to make sure we execute for 40 minutes."

Olivia Lane recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead UND's post presence. The freshman closed the opening 20 minutes with eight boards to stymy the Golden Eagles second chance opportunities as North Dakota outscored ORU, 17-8. Jaclyn Jarnot tallied 14 points while sister Alaina Jarnot scored 13, and Julia Fleecs added 11.

North Dakota opened 8-of-13 (.615) from the field to control the Golden Eagles after the first quarter, 20-15. Though Oral Roberts tried to rally with its 3-of-5 shooting behind the arc, the Hawks sustained its lead at the half, 33-31.

With Fleecs in foul trouble early, Oral Roberts smelled blood in the water and continued to attack the post as it quickly drew two more fouls on Fleecs and spread UND's posts thin. ORU would finish 25-of-29 (.862) at the line in the second half.

The Golden Eagles, who also went 14-for-31 from the field in the second half, would eventually lead by 18 points early in the fourth quarter as four players reached double figures. Montserrat Brotons led with her 20 points.

UND cut the ORU lead back to seven points with 2:35 remaining after timely stops and a pair of threes by Alaina Jarnot in front of the North Dakota bench. However, Oral Roberts continued to make its shots and get back to the line to thwart North Dakota's plans.

The Fighting Hawks will return to action Sunday, Feb. 9, when it hosts No. 22/18 South Dakota at The Betty. Tipoff time is slated for 2 p.m. MidcoSN's pregame show will begin at 1:45 p.m.
