SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Despite striking for three runs over the final two innings, the University of North Dakota fell, 7-4, to Weber State on Sunday afternoon to close out the San Diego Classic with a 2-3 mark.Â
UND (6-13) trailed 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh before back-to-back RBI singles cut the deficit to 7-4; however, the Fighting Hawks were thrown out trying to advance to third on the final play of the game to halt the rally and give Weber State its ninth straight win over the green and white.Â
It was another strong day at the plate for
Ashlynn Uvila, with the junior driving in a pair of runs on a 2-for-3 afternoon to record her third multi-RBI game of the tournament.
Angel Love led UND with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI while
Jocelyn Kirk also smacked two hits, drove in a run, and scored one herself.Â
Nikki Pica saw her record fall to 2-4 on the season, tossing 5.1 innings of nine-hit, seven-run (four earned) ball. The senior also walked a tetrad of runners before giving way to a scoreless 1.2 inning outing from
Lexi Flom.Â
Weber State threatened in the opening two innings by loading the bases in the top of the first before Pica picked up a huge strikeout to strand the bags full of Wildcats, but WSU responded with three quick runs in the next frame to jump out to a 3-0 advantage.Â
The trio of Love, Romero, and Uvila answered in the bottom of the second with three straight singles to cut the lead to 3-1. UND nearly tied the game in the stanza, placing runners on second and third with two outs, but a strikeout couldn't get the runners home.Â
WSU responded with a run of its own in the top of the third before the bats went silent through the middle of the contest. The bats woke up in a big way for the Wildcats, however, with Weber State smacking a pair of home runs in the top of the sixth to stetch the lead to 7-1 and end Pica's afternoon.Â
Uvila drove home her second run of the day and inched UND closer in the bottom of the sixth, driving a two-out pitch through the right side to score Kirk and trim the deficit to 7-2 entering the final frame of play.Â
After a quick top half of the stanza, the bats right back to work for UND.
Victoria Minor and
Morgan Flann led off the inning with back-to-back singles before a
Jannay Jones fielder's choice placed runners on the corners with one out. Now with two outs, Kirk beat out a single to the shortstop to score Minor, cut the lead to 7-3, and place runners on first and second for Love. The senior roped a ball into right field to score a run, but Kirk was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the game.Â
North Dakota will head to Wilmington, N.C. next weekend for five games against a trio of teams. UND will begin the tournament on Friday morning with a showdown against Georgetown at 9 a.m.Â
