Fighting Hawks drop pair of games in Wilmington

UND closes the tournament tomorrow at 9 a.m. vs. Georgetown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The University of North Dakota softball team dropped a pair of tough games on Saturday in the second day of action at the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington. The Fighting Hawks fell, 3-2, to the host-Seahawks in walk-off fashion before closing the day with a 4-0 defeat to Presbyterian.

UNCW 3, North Dakota 2
A out-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh game UNC Wilmington a 3-2 win over North Dakota to open the day's action.

Despite the loss, Jannay Jones once again pitched well in the circle for the Hawks, as the sophomore fired her fourth straight complete game and allowed only three runs while striking out six.

UND was only limited to a trio of hits, with Alexys Campos leading the way with a hit and a run scored and Victoria Minor drawing a walk and scoring the second run of the game.

UNCW threatened in the bottom of the second by loading the bases with only one out, but the UND defense recorded a force out at home and Jones followed with a strikeout to end the threat and strand the bases full.

The Hawks took advantage in the next half inning with a pair of outs. Campos reached on a fielding error before coming around to score on another error by the Seahawk defense to give the green and white a 1-0 advantage heading to the fourth inning.

The Seahawks knotted the contest at one in the fourth stanza, but UND answered right back again with some smart baserunning. After drawing a walk, Minor swiped second with one out before stealing third and coming home to score on a fielding error by the short stop to put the visitors back in front, 2-1.

Jones danced around some trouble in both the fifth and sixth, but the Seahawks put runners on first and second with just one away to put the go-ahead run on base. UNCW won the game on the next at-bat with a two-run double to right center to give the hosts the 3-2 win.

Presbyterian 4, North Dakota 0
The North Dakota offense fell silent in the nightcap to Presbyterian, posting only a trio of hits and striking out seven times against Haley Haselden to drop a 4-0 decision to the Blue Hose.

Nikki Pica, who shutout PC in the meeting yesterday, surrendered four runs on five hits while striking out five to fall to 3-5 on the season.

Presbyterian jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings and turned the lead over to its pitching and defense, by allowing only one runner to advance beyond second base for the remainder of the game. The Blue Hose built on their lead with another two runs in the top of the seventh before closing out the Hawks in the bottom of the frame to collect the 4-0 win.

North Dakota will close the weekend tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. showdown against Georgetown.
