WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Georgetown plated five of its six runs over the first two innings before holding off a late-UND charge to defeat the Fighting Hawks, 6-4, on Sunday morning to close the Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington.
Trailing by five in the bottom of the seventh, UND (7-17) scored three times and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but could not complete the comeback to finish the tournament with a 1-4 mark.
It was a tough outing in the circle for
Madi Moore, as the freshman allowed five earned runs on four hits over 1.1 innings to fall to 0-2 on the season.
Lexi Flom came on strong out of the bullpen, however, surrendering only one run and a walk while scattering 11 hits to keep the Hawks within striking distance over the final 5.2 frames.
Ashylnn Uvila continued her hot play as of late at the plate by driving in a pair of runs and reaching on a hit and walk to record another multi-hit and multi-RBI game.
Jailene Carpio and
Alicia Young also tallied a pair of hits each while
Dani Romero added a home run in the bottom of the second.
Georgetown opened up a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the second before Romero cut into the deficit on the first pitch she saw, launching a solo shot over the left field fence to begin the chip away.
Both teams placed a pair of runners on in the fourth, but neither could make a dent on the scoreboard. UND's defense turned a slick double play to end the Hoya threat before a popout with runners on first and second by the Hawks left the score at 5-1.
GU added a sixth run in the top of the fifth and looked to put the game out of reach in the seventh by loading the bases with no outs; however, Flom worked her way out of the jam and stranded the bases full to keep the deficit at five heading to the bottom of the final stanza.
Jocelyn Kirk and a
Victoria Minor fielder's choice placed runners on the corners with one out
Angel Love, who singled to right field to score Kirk, before moving to second on a ground out and moving Minor to third for Uvila. With two outs, Uvila doubled down the right field line to score a pair and bring the tying run to the plate. That was as close as the Hawks would get, as the Hoyas recorded the final out and held on for the win.
North Dakota will head to Lincoln, Neb. for a tetrad of games against Northern Colorado and Nebraska on Mar. 14-15.
