North Dakota Falls 3-0 at North Dakota State

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) to North Dakota State (9-12, 3-6 Summit) at Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse on Saturday night. Even with the result, UND held an 8-6 blocking advantage in the match.

Lexi Ahrens led the Fighting Hawks (1-20, 0-9 Summit) offensively with seven kills, followed by Maddy Hornyak and Ashlyn Olson with five kills apiece. Elizabeth Norris and Kortney Carney split the setting duties and paced the offense with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. Carney also had both the UND service aces on the night.

Defensively, North Dakota racked up 15 blocks (one solo, 14 assisted). Ahrens had the team-lead in blocks with four (one solo, three assisted), trailed by Olson with three blocking assists. Madi Hart led the defensive effort with 25 digs.

In the match, NDSU hit a .222 percent at the clip, compared to UND firing a .069 percent. North Dakota held an 8-6 edge in blocks, while North Dakota State finished with the lead in kills (43-27), service aces (7-2), assists (39-25) and digs (76-59).

In the opening set, NDSU started on a 3-0 run and built their lead up to 9-3 before the Fighting Hawks began clawing their way back into the set. The 4-1 spurt for UND started with a kill from Ahrens and concluded with a kill from Kelly Wahl, a Bison attack error and a service ace from Carney. NDSU responded by increasing its lead to 15-8 before UND went on another 3-0 scoring run to bring the tally to 15-11 in favor of NDSU. A pair of Bison service aces and back-to-back blocks for North Dakota, followed by a Taylor Pribyl kill trimmed the lead down to 17-16 and forced a North Dakota State timeout. Following the break, the Bison mustered a 6-1 scoring advantage to put their lead back to 23-17. Set one concluded with the teams exchanging points and NDSU winning the set 25-19. In the opening frame, the Bison were out-blocked 4-2 by the Fighting Hawks.

North Dakota State started the second set with an 8-3 lead early. The Fighting Hawks put a stop to the early run with another block from Wahl and Olson, followed by Carney's second service ace of the night to cut the lead down to 8-5. Unfortunately, NDSU never surrendered the lead and it was the closest UND would come to tying the set, with the Bison taking set two by a tally of 25-15.

The final set began with the Fighting Hawks trailing 4-0, before knotting the set up at 4-4. The North Dakota comeback was powered by a block from McGlynn and Ahrens and a kill from Ahrens. The Bison would go back up 9-5 before the Fighting Hawks responded with a 3-0 run of their own with kills from Olson and Abi McGlynn. Midway through the set, the score was 15-10 in favor of NDSU. The final run for North Dakota came after the 19-12 mark when the Hawks had back-to-back kills to come within 19-14. NDSU took the final set by a score of 25-17.

North Dakota will visit Kansas City at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
