Balanced attack, Driscoll pace No. 7 UND past Miami

Sanderson scores two goals, Ford tallies three assists in win

OXFORD, Ohio -- No. 7 North Dakota saw seven-different players tally a point while goaltender Zach Driscoll stopped 15-of-16 shots to help guide the Fighting Hawks past Miami, 4-1, on Friday night from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.

In the road conference opener for UND (7-3-0, 3-0-0-0 NCHC), the green and white struck in every period and built a 3-0 lead before a late power play goal by Miami's (2-6-1, 1-2-0-0 NCHC) Dylan Moulton broke the shutout bid for Driscoll.

Driscoll, who enters the weekend as the reigning conference goaltender of the week, made four of his 15 stops while the RedHawks were on the man advantage, including a pair of great stops early in the first period to help UND settle in.

Jake Sanderson potted a pair of goals, including the game winner, and added an assist while Connor Ford dished out three helpers in his return to the state where he played four seasons at Bowling Green.

After an early penalty kill, the Fighting Hawks drew three straight penalties on Miami to flip the momentum and test goaltender Ludvig Persson. The defending NCHC Rookie of the Year made some highlight-reel saves on the first pair of kills, but Riese Gaber broke through at the 11:24 mark when the sophomore took a pass from Sanderson at the point and wired a shot over Persson's glove to give UND a 1-0 lead.

Despite those two early chances on the power play for Miami, the green and white held the RedHawks to just one shot on goal for the remainder of the period to head to intermission with a 1-0 lead.

In the second, UND kept up its attack before eventually doubling its advantage on a 4-on-2 rush. Ashton Calder won a battle along the wall in the defensive zone to get the puck forward to Ford, who cut into the offensive zone and returned the pass to Calder. The junior threaded a pass to a streaking Sanderson and a wide-open net to make it 2-0 for the visitors at 14:45 of the frame.

Matteo Costantini made it three straight games with a goal just four minutes into the third when the freshman parked himself in front and saw a Tyler Kleven shot deflect off him, off the post, off Persson's skate and in to extend the advantage to 3-0 early in the final frame.

A late power play goal by Miami was canceled out by Sanderson's second, a nearly 200-foot shot that found the empty net following a Ford face-off win to seal the 4-1 victory.

North Dakota and Miami conclude the series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. (CT) on NCHC.tv and the Home of Economy Radio Network.
