GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota volleyball team (1-29, 0-18 Summit League) had Senior Day spoiled by a 3-0 sweep from South Dakota State (18-11, 10-8 Summit League) inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon.
Ashlyn Olson led UND with nine kills, trailed by 
Abi McGlynn putting down eight K's. 
Lexi Ahrens and 
Maddy Hornyak were the next most productive attackers for the Fighting Hawks with six and five kills, respectively.
Peyton Sewell was the top setter for the Hawks with 14 assists. 
Kortney Carney was second in assists with 13.
Madi Hart paced the defensive effort with 13 digs. 
Darian Chwialkowski piled up eight digs to go with the lone service ace for the Fighting Hawks.
McGlynn, Ahrens and 
Kelly Wahl each earned one blocking assist apiece.
In the match, UND was outhit by SDSU .300-.210. The Jackrabbits put down six service aces in the match and held a 45-39 edge in kills.
North Dakota started out with a 2-0 lead in set one with terminating attacks from Olson and Wahl, but South Dakota State knotted the game up at 2-2 after the next two points. The Hawks reclaimed the lead with a 3-0 run at 5-2 and then the teams traded points until 7-4. After the teams traded a pairs of points, the Jackrabbits went on a 10-2 run to claim the lead at 16-11. SDSU continued leading until 20-13, when UND used a 7-0 run of its own, highlighted by a pair of kills from Ahrens, and single kills from Hornyak and 
McCallister Gayle to knot the game up at 20-20. South Dakota State scored five of the last eight points in the set to take the opening set 25-23.
South Dakota State started the second stanza up 9-6 early, but it was North Dakota claiming the lead at 10-9 after terminations from Wahl and Olson and a pair of SDSU attack errors. The Fighting Hawks continued holding the lead at 12-11, but back-to-back points from the opposition put the Jack Rabbits up at 13-12. Following that point, SDSU used a pair of 3-0 runs later in the set to increase its lead to 20-16. Olson and McGlynn put down kills later in the set to bring North Dakota back within one at 20-19, but SDSU put down consecutive 2-0 runs, separated only by one of its own errors to lead 24-20 late. Carney provided hope late with a kill, but South Dakota State took set two at 25-21.
In the final stanza, SDSU led 13-7 midway through set three and never looked back. A McGlynn kill and a Chwialkowski service ace trimmed the deficit to 15-11, but the Jackrabbits used runs of 3-0 and 4-0 late to build its lead to 23-15. Carney and McGlynn had the final two terminating attacks for the Hawks, but it was not enough as the Jackrabbits took the final set by a tally of 25-16.
