BURLINGTON, Verm. – After a slow start, the Fighting Hawks (2-4) rally and coast past the Bears for a 65-46 win on Sunday afternoon.
Olivia Lane earned a double-double against Brown with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She led the Fighting Hawks in rebounding and helped them beat the Bears on boards, 51-38.
Claire Orth and
Kacie Borowicz had another outstanding showing. They both ended the afternoon with 17 points and five rebounds.
Winning the initial tip, the Fighting Hawks struggled to score within the first minutes of the first quarter. Brown took the initial lead, and they instantly pressured UND who struggled against the press. Causing turnovers and rushed shots, Brown went up 4-0 before Borowicz scored a jump shot to put North Dakota on the board. Brown quickly responded with a three and forced a shot on defense to keep them in the lead. They maintained the lead until
Joli Daninger forced a turnover and earned a steal to push the ball up for an easy jumper for Orth and three for Borowicz. A media timeout was called to pause the game with 4:42 left in the quarter. Borowicz scored a quick two to put the Hawks in the lead for the first time that afternoon, but it would not last long as Brown responded with a three. Orth snagged an offensive rebound and put it back up for the final lead change of the game. The Hawks' defense forced a shot clock violation and a few bad passes, which resulted in their offense going on a 6-0 run. Brown called a timeout, but they were unable to adjust and ended up only scoring four points in the second half of the first quarter.
North Dakota headed into the second quarter up 21-13.
Melissa Leet scored a layup early on to keep the energy high for the Hawks. Brown suffered a scoring drought as UND's defense locked them down for the first 5:30 of the second quarter. Once the Bears hit a shot, it was a back-and-forth battle on offense between the two teams. The Fighting Hawks headed into the half with a double-digit lead (39-24).
Starting the second half, Brown came out strong with a 5-0 run. It was UND's turn to suffer a scoring drought. It lasted for the first 3:08 of the third quarter, but Lane broke it with an easy layup. Borowicz kept the scoring going and added a three, which forced the Bears to add pressure to the ball in the middle of the third. The Hawks adjusted easily to the pressure and went on an 11-0 run before the Bears responded with a three late in the quarter.
Although Brown was able to make as many points as UND in the third quarter, it would not be enough to help them as they headed into the fourth. The Hawks offense continued to attack and even when the Bears added pressure, they continued to expand the lead. A few new faces entered the game at the end of the quarter for UND.
Allie McCarthy added two points off the bench followed by
Carlee Sieben who scored the final three points of the game for North Dakota.
"I thought it was important we got out of here (Burlington) with a win – especially after feeling like we let one slip away yesterday," said head coach
Mallory Bernhard. "Every win is important as we continue to rebuild the program. We played against a style we hadn't seen before and likely won't see again and handled it very well at times. I do want our consistency to improve. We have to several things we still need to continue to stress and get better in, but now that we have all of our available players back, we can begin to develop chemistry and keep making progress."
North Dakota heads to New York to play Siena College on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. CT.
