Hawks Break Three-Point Records in 110-65 Win

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota broke both the school record and Betty Engelstad Sioux Center record for made three-pointers in a game with 17, en route to a 110-65 win over North Central University (Minn.) on Tuesday evening. Six Hawks netted double figures in the victory, and every UND player that suited up scored points.

The previous record for made three-pointers was 16, which was tied three times, most recently on Dec. 17, 2019 in a 109-50 victory over Northland College at the Betty.

The Hawks (4-8) were led by Matt Norman, pouring in 23 points for a new season-high, including a season-best seven made three-pointers. He also dished out a team-best six assists and pulled down five rebounds.

Brendan Howard was next in scoring with 18 points, going 8-for-9 from the field to go with two steals.

Brian Mathews netted a new season-best with 17 points, knocking down seven of his eight shots from the field, and corralling five boards.

Paul Bruns and Ethan Igbanugo both had 15 points apiece, with Igbanugo hitting a new career-high four triples and Bruns just missing out on his first career double-double with nine rebounds.

Tsotne Tsartsidze added 11 points, followed by Brady Danielson netting six points, Bentiu Panoam chipping in three and Reid Grant adding two.

Igbanugo, Bruns and Howard all shared the team-lead in steals with two, while Tsartsidze had the lone block for UND.

In the game, North Dakota finished with a shooting percentage of 59.7, including 17-for-31 from beyond the arc for 54.8 percent. The Hawks also went 13-for-18 at the charity stripe. Comparatively, North Central had a total shooting percentage of 36.4 percent from the floor. The Hawks held the Rams to seven made triples, lower than NCU's average of 11 made three-pointers per game.

The Fighting Hawks finished with the advantage in all major statistical categories: points in the paint (46-28), bench scoring (60-16), rebounds (39-36), fast break points (30-5), points off turnovers (21-6), assists (24-9) and steals (6-5). The Rams finished with a 15-11 edge in second chance points, while both teams recorded one block.

North Dakota never trailed in the game, scoring the first two points off Tsartsidze free throws and starting with a 9-0 run to lead 9-2 at the first media timeout. The Fighting Hawks never took their foot off the gas pedal, leading from the opening bucket and leading by as many as 51, finishing with the 110-65 victory.

The school record for most made three-pointers in a game came with 6:52 left, when Bruns knocked down a triple off an assist from Igbanugo to put the Hawks up 100-52.

North Dakota will now host Dixie State in a 1 p.m. (CT) tilt on Saturday.
