Second half pushes UND past Omaha, 81-69

Filip Rebraca records second straight double-double; Panoam scores 19

OMAHA -- The University of North Dakota men's basketball team defeated Omaha, 81-69, on Saturday night from Baxter Arena in Omaha.

UND (9-16, 8-8 Summit League) snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Mavericks (3-19, 1-11 Summit League) dating to 2007 with a 43-25 outburst in the second half to end the conference season with a .500 record.

Bentiu Panoam was the spark again on offense, just missing his third 20-point outing in the last four games, scoring a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and knocked down five triples on seven attempts along with five rebounds to lead the way for the visitors.

Filip Rebraca matched his season average with 17 points while grabbing 13 rebounds to notch his second straight double-double and his 20th of his career to record his 33rd straight game in double figures.

Ethan Igbanugo also reached double figures with 16 points on a near-perfect 4-for-7 night from the field and a trio of threes to go alongside his four assists, two steals and two rebounds. Tyree Ihenacho stuffed the stats once again, setting a new career-high in rebounds with 12 while scoring nine points, dishing out six assists and recording a trio of steals.

North Dakota bounced back from a tough shooting night on Friday, connecting on nearly 51 percent of its shots to move to 3-0 this season when connecting at a 50 percent clip or higher. UND also knocked down nine threes while holding Omaha to just six triples and a .444 average from the field overall.

The Hawks were also a force on the boards, out rebounding the Mavs, 42-24, thanks to 13 offensive rebounds to move UND to 5-0 in league play this season when winning the battle on the boards.

In an opposite feel of last night, it was North Dakota who jumped out to the early lead, quickly moving in front by double digits on a pair of threes by Igbanugo, a triple by Panoam and back-to-back buckets from Rebraca and Caleb Nero to put UND in front, 17-6, less than seven minutes into the game.

Omaha started to rally, scoring 18 of the next 20 points to take a 24-19 lead just beyond the halfway point of the first stanza. The advantage hovered around five for a majority of the first half until a three at the buzzer put the Mavs up by six, 44-38, at the halftime break.

Out of the halftime break, UND started the chip away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 49 on a 6-0 run with back-to-back buckets from Rebraca and a layup in transition by Seybian Sims, but Omaha followed up with five straight to jump back in front, 54-49, at the under-16 timeout.

The timeout seemed to calm the nerves of the visitors, with the Hawks exploding for a run of their own to move in front by 12, 68-56, with just under 10 minutes to play. UND was able to attack the paint during the run, with Igbanugo and Rebraca each throwing down dunks and Mitch Sueker sinking back-to-back layups to spark the rally.

The lead never shrank under 10 for the remainder of the game, as UND closed out its first double-digit win of the season.

North Dakota will now wait to find out its Summit League Tournament opponent that begins on Saturday, March 6 in Sioux Falls.
