Strong Final Sets Fall Short for UND in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -  North Dakota took advantage of 32 Omaha errors on Sunday, pushing the Mavericks to the brink in the final two sets, but the Mavs' powerful hitting overcame its flaws as UNO defeated UND, 15-25, 24-26, 22-25.

Taylor Riedl led the University of North Dakota with eight kills and 8.5 points, while Lexi Ahrens added seven points, six kills, two block assists, and a hitting percentage of .462. Sara Antic tallied 6.5 points with one ace, five kills, and a block assist.

North Dakota's pace was valuable on the attack in the opening set as it forced six Omaha attacking errors. UND also capitalized on the Mavericks four service errors to push UNO. However, the offensive attack only resulted in four UND kills.

Service errors continued to plague Omaha in the second set, allowing North Dakota to capitalize and build momentum. North Dakota improved its kill tally to 11 in the frame and continued to keep its errors down on the attack, committing only five in the set to Omaha's seven.

The two teams traded runs in the second set, trading leads and ties throughout the set. North Dakota rallied to take a 13-12 lead before Omaha went on a 4-0 run to recapture the lead. After the Hawks tied the match at 17, Omaha retook the lead, 20-17, paving North Dakota's way back on top, 23-22. The Mavericks would win in deuce, however, 26-24.

Omaha opened the third frame in dominating fashion with a 10-5 lead, hitting .667 with eight kills in 12 attempts. North Dakota was also attacking well with a .342 clip to start the third. However, the Fighting Hawks attack remained steadfast in the final set as the Mavs continued to error, hitting six errors and dropping its average over 300 points.

North Dakota continued to make its runs on UNO, tying the match at 18, 21, and 22. The Mavericks wound up taking the final set and the match, 25-22.

The Fighting Hawks and Mavericks will close the series tomorrow afternoon, with first serve set for 1 p.m.
