GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Redshirt freshman
Sofia Hedqvist continued her hot streak, tallying 11 kills against North Dakota State (9-8, 7-8 Summit). However, her effort wasn't enough for North Dakota (2-15, 2-13 Summit) as it fell to the Bison, 19-25, 18-25, 22-25.
In addition to her 14 assists,
Peyton Sewell recorded three kills, two solo blocks, and one assisted block. Middle hitters
Lexi Ahrens and
Alexa Albinson finished with eight and six kills, respectively. Hedqvist has averaged 2.75 kills per set in the last three matches after entering the Western Illinois series with three career kills.
The Fighting Hawks and Bison played a tight opening set, playing to an 11-10 score before NDSU began to separate themselves from the Hawks. UND held the North Dakota State offense in check, limiting it to a .196 hitting percentage, but NDSU prevailed to take the early lead.
North Dakota improved its hitting percentage by over 30 points in the second set, but the Bison took an early five-point lead and did not allow UND to climb within four the rest of the set, despite the Fighting Hawks runs.
In the final frame,
Sara Antic and Hedqvist rallied the Fighting Hawks back from a 13-12 deficit to a 19-16 advantage as both players recorded four kills each in the set en route to UND's match best 14 kills in the set. Trailing 21-19, the Bison closed the third set on a 6-1 run to clinch the opener with its 25-22 triumph in the frame.
Both
Darian Chwialkowski and
Madi Hart reached double-digit digs, with Chwialkowski leading the Hawks with 12, while Hart registered 11.
UND and NDSU will close the 2021 season at 7 p.m., Central tomorrow night. Seniors
Taylor Riedl and Antic will also be honored as part of the team's Senior Night festivities.
