GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team kept it rolling on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 sweep over Illinois State from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
UND picked up its 10th win of the season for the second time in the last three seasons and starts the conference season with a 2-0 mark for the second straight year.
Doubles play was highly contested, but North Dakota captured a pair of 6-4 wins on the top and bottom courts before a 7-6 victory at the middle position by the hosts sealed a 1-0 start.
Gerhard Sullwald and
Cian McDonnell picked up the win from the No. 1 position and
Edmond Aynedjian and
Petro Alex followed suit from the No. 3 court to make it 1-0 UND.
In singles action, Aynedjian kept it going with a 6-4, 6-0 win on the No. 4 court before
Lucas Percy made it 3-0 with a pair of 6-2 victories from the No. 5 position to push the match to its brink.
Alex sealed the deal with a strong performance at the bottom spot with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph but a pair of 6-4 scores by Sullwald and a 7-5, 7-6 win by
Johnatan Parat made it six straight. It took a battle in three sets, but McDonnell capped off the sweep by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback.
North Dakota will enjoy a few days off before returning to action on Apr. 1 at Creighton at 12:30 p.m. from Omaha.
