FARGO, N.D. – Led by dynamic pitching, No. 2 seed Omaha defeated No. 6 seed North Dakota, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal matchup of the Summit League Tournament from Tharaldson Park in Fargo, N.D.
Â
UND (17-32) will now play the No. 1 seed South Dakota State in approximately 30 minutes in an elimination game while the Mavericks advance to Friday's semifinal against No. 4 seed Kansas City.
Â
The Fighting Hawks could not muster any offense against Omaha pitcher Kamryn Meyer, who did not allow a hit in the winning effort. UND was able to get a pair of baserunners aboard, with
Alexys Campos drawing a walk and
Cassie Castaneda reaching via an error.
Â
Lauren Feld earned the start and allowed two earned runs with five hits and three walks.
Nikki Pica entered in the bottom of the fifth and allowed three hits and two runs in relief.
Â
After neither side could get a hit through the first two innings, Omaha started to put it together in the bottom of the third. The Mavericks opened the stanza with three straight singles to load the bases with no outs, plating a run with a one-out single to take a 1-0 lead. UNO extended the lead to 2-0, but a great diving stop by
Jocelyn Kirk kept the deficit at just a pair after three.
Â
Omaha pushed the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth when a two-out hit just eluded a great play from
Chevelle Sartin at second base to score the runner. Feld escaped the damage with any further runs to keep the lead at three after four complete.
Â
The Mavericks added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 5-0, but North Dakota could not overcome the deficit for a second straight day.
