Hawks Fall 93-74 at Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Five different players reached double-digits to help lead Denver over North Dakota, 93-74, in Summit League men's basketball action Saturday afternoon from Hamilton Gymnasium.

The Pioneers (6-11, 2-2 SL) were led by K.J. Hunt and Coban Porter each scoring 20 points.

While shooting 56.7 percent as a team, three other Pioneers finished with double figures off the bench for Denver, in a game where the Pioneers held an 18-7 advantage in points off turnovers and where they were up 11-0 at intermission in that category.

North Dakota (4-12, 0-3 SL) shot 51.0 percent from the floor in the game and was led by Paul Bruns, who just missed out on a double-double, netting 20 points and hauling in nine rebounds.

Tsotne Tsartsidze and Mitchell Sueker were the only other Hawks in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

In the game, Denver forced 18 North Dakota turnovers and claimed a 42-38 edge in points in the paint. The Fighting Hawks won the rebounding battle by a 29-27 margin.

North Dakota led 9-4 early before Denver went on a 12-0 run to claim the lead at 16-9 with 15:49 left in the opening half.

A Sueker jumper closed the gap to 16-14 seconds later, before back-to-back triples from the Pioneers shortly after increased their lead up to 27-18 with just over eight minutes left in the half. By intermission, DU had built its lead up to 54-37.

Denver opened the second half on a 5-1 run and led 59-38 with 17 minutes left in the game. The deficit hovered around the 20-point mark for most of the second half with Denver leading by 26 at 77-51 with 8:57 left to play.

The Hawks held a 23-18-point scoring advantage in the final nine minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit and the Pioneers came away with the 93-74 win.

North Dakota will now return home to host South Dakota in the COVID-19 make-up game at 7 p.m. inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Monday night. Fans can catch the game on Midco Sports or tune into the contest on the Home of Economy Radio Network.
