FARGO, N.D. – No. 16/23 North Dakota fell 42-21 at No. 4 North Dakota State on Saturday late afternoon. The Fighting Hawks were within two scores at the break at 28-14, but the 14-0 lead for the Bison at the end of the first quarter proved to be too big of a deficit to climb out of.
Cam Miller led NDSU (9-2, 7-1 MVFC) with five rushing touchdowns, while piling up 93 yards on 16 carries. He was also 8-for-12 passing for 159 yards. NDSU finished with 522 total yards of offense, with 363 yards on the ground and 159 through the air.
Tommy Schuster went 11-for-19 for UND (7-4, 5-3 MVFC), putting down 153 yards passing and two touchdowns. NDSU got to the elusive QB twice on the afternoon.
Bo Belquist was Schuster's top target with four receptions for 102 yards. Garett Maag was next with three grabs for 25 yards and a score.
Tyler Hoosman paced UND on the ground with 75 yards on 13 touches. Isaiah Smith also had 53 yards on four carries.
Devon Krzanowski led the defense with nine tackles, five of them being solo. Kason Kelley also added seven tackles. Krzanowski, Kelley and Aaron Cooper each recorded one tackle-for-loss.
North Dakota had 318 yards of offense, passing for 153 of them and rushing for the other 165.
North Dakota State led 14-0 after the first quarter. The Bison scored on their second play of the game, when TaMerik Williams ran it in from 51-yards out. On its next possession, NDSU was pinned at their own three following a UND punt but found the end zone for the second time of the afternoon when Cam Miller scored on a four-yard scamper, capping the 8-play, 97 yard drive.
The Bisons would get the ball back following a Hawk fumble on the following possession late in the first quarter. Seven plays later, Miller scored his second rushing touchdown on of the afternoon from seven yards out.
Less than three minutes into the second quarter, Schuster would connect with Belquist for a 63-yard pass to give UND first and goal at the two. Two plays later, Quincy Vaughn scored on a one-yard rush to bring the tally to 21-7.
North Dakota State would score 13 plays later, with the 92-yard drive capped by a three-yard touchdown rush from Miller. On its next drive, North Dakota would face fourth and one late in the half and picked up the first down on a Vaughn rush. Moments later, UND would make it 28-14 with six seconds left in the half when Schuster found Maag for an 18-yard touchdown pass.
The Fighting Hawks looked to have momentum coming out of intermission, forcing a fumble after a 57-yard kick return, but the Bisons were ruled down after review. On the next play, Kobe Johnson would rush 44 yards down to the UND 1. Three plays later, Miller added another touchdown run, this time from five yards out to bring the score to 35-14.
North Dakota responded with a 72-yard drive, capped by Vaughn jumping over the pile on fourth and one to cut the deficit to 35-21 with 7:41 left in the third quarter. North Dakota State would next score with 1:22 left in the quarter to make it 42-21 after a 30-yard Miller rushing touchdown. Neither team would score in the final 15 minutes.

- North Dakota is now 62-50-3 all-time in the series against North Dakota State.
- In the first half, the Bisons had 303 yards of offense with 170 on the ground and 133 through the air. The Fighting Hawks had 207 total offensive yards in the opening 30 minutes, rushing for 67 yards and passing for 140.
- Cam Miller for NDSU had a career-high five rushing touchdowns. It marks the first time the UND defense has given up five rushing touchdowns since Sept. 28, 2019 - a 35-20 loss at Eastern Washington.
- North Dakota had the lone turnover of the game.
