Western Michigan holds off UND, 4-2, in NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinal

Fighting Hawks await NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday

SAINT PAUL -- Ty Glover scored two goals and the defense blocked 21 shots to help No. 7 Western Michigan defeat fifth-ranked North Dakota, 4-2, in the semifinals of the NCHC Frozen Faceoff on Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
UND (24-13-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Broncos (25-10-1) responded with three straight goals to capture their third win in five tries over the Fighting Hawks this season.
Special teams proved to be a major difference, with the green and white coming up empty on five opportunities while WMU went 1-for-3. The Broncos nearly had a shorthanded goal as well, with Hugh Larkin scoring just after exiting the penalty box to give them a 3-1 lead late in the second.
Brendan Bussi stopped 21-of-23 shots thrown his way, but his biggest came midway through the third period when the Long Island, N.Y., native made a sprawling save with his pad on Connor Ford to deny the graduate transfer forward of the tying goal. Zach Driscoll finished with 22 stops on the 25 attempts he saw but saw his career-high winning streak come to an end at nine.
Judd Caulfield broke the scoreless deadlock just 11:45 into the game, when the junior forward settled down a loose puck in the slot and flipped it over the pad of Bussi to give UND a 1-0 lead. The goal was the seventh in 10 career games against the Broncos and the fourth of the season against WMU.

Less than two minutes later, WMU knotted the game at 1-1, as Glover tallied his first of the night after he pounced on a scramble in the crease to tie the contest heading to the first intermission.

Penalties filled the middle frame, with UND having three power play opportunities and Western having one. That one chance was all the Broncos needed, however, as Glover tipped home a Michael Joyaux shot to give WMU a 2-1 lead with just under six minutes to play in the frame.
UND looked likely to head into the third period trailing by a pair following Larkin's goal with just 31 seconds left, but Nick Portz answered with a slapper from just inside the offensive zone past the glove of Bussi to answer with seven ticks remaining and trim the lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes.
The momentum seemed to remain with UND in the middle portion of the final period, when the Hawks killed off a five-minute major penalty thanks to five saves from Driscoll, but could not level the score. WMU finished off the victory on Max Sasson's empty-net strike with just over a minute to play.
North Dakota will find out its NCAA Tournament opponent and destination on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
