Grand Forks, N.D. – The University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks remains a perfect 9-0 at home, following an intense rivalry with Denver at the Betty Engelstad arena this afternoon. After the last road trip UND returned to form shooting 42.6 percent from the field and an outstanding 81.3 percent from the line in the 68-57 win.
The defensive game for UND remained the focus for Coach
Mallory Bernhard, forcing 16 DU turnovers. The ladies also held a high scoring Denver team to six points in the third quarter.
Kacie Borowicz led the Fighting Hawks (11-6, 4-3 SL) with 23 points. She also drew five fouls, had one assist and two steals.
Claire Orth had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists on the afternoon.
Juliet Gordon paced the team with eight rebounds and led the team in minutes played with 33. She also went 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
North Dakota started the game trailing for the first half of the opening quarter, but
Maggie Manson drained a long three following a turnover with 2:37 left to make it 15-15. Daninger ended the period going 2-for-2 at the charity line to end the quarter 17-17.
As the clock turned into the second quarter UND went on an 8-3 run, to take the lead 25-20. DU regained the lead for a short moment before
Nakiyah Hurst nailed one from distance to put the Hawks back up, 28-27. UND and Denver would continue to match each other shot for shot tying the game up two more times in the second quarter. UND would take a four-point lead into the half.
The Fighting Hawks continued to lead the rest of the game, holding Denver to 21 points in the final two quarters, while adding 28 points to the sheet. UND held on for the final 20 minutes of the game to win 68-57.
North Dakota will continue Summit League play on Thursday, visiting Kansas City at 7 p.m. The game will air on Roos All-Access and will be carried on the Home of Economy Radio Network.
