GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota volleyball team suffered a season sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Roos Saturday, falling 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-16).
Marissa Stockman put up one of her best performances in green and white, hitting .824 with 15 kills, setting a new career high, on 17 attacks with a single error. She also assisted on four blocks. Izzie McCormick led with 19 digs and Teagan Timperley led with 23 assists.
The first set seesawed back and forth with neither team able to keep the other at a distance. Each time one team would make a run, the other would answer. Deadlocked at 17 late in the frame, UND went on an 8-1 run to close out the set and go up 1-0 in the match. Paige Barber picked up two of her 11 kills in the stretch, while Stockman had five kills in the frame.
Just like the first set, the second began very nip and tuck as neither team was able to get separation from the other. With the teams tied at nine, the green and white picked up four straight points as McCallister Gayle picked up three kills in the run. The Roos reeled off five straight points to go up 18-17 and did not trail the rest of the stanza.
In a manner much resembling the first two sets, the third began with the teams going back and forth and neither going on a sustained run. Down 11-9, UND went on a 4-0 run to take the lead back, but Kansas City quickly answered. The Fighting Hawks got within one at 16-15, but could not overtake the Roos the rest of the set as the visitors went up 2-1.
Early on in the fourth frame the Roos had the upper hand, but NoDak chipped away and drew even in the middle of the set at 15. A kill from Stockman tied the set once again at 16, but from there it was all Roos as they took the last nine points of the match.
The Fighting Hawks will close out their season against North Dakota State on Tuesday, Nov. 14 on Senior Night.
