Cold shooting dooms UND in 75-53 loss at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The North Dakota women's basketball team fell 75-53 to Southern Miss at the 36th annual Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic Friday in Reed Green Coliseum.

The second and third quarters were the difference in the contest, as the Lady Eagles outscored the Fighting Hawks 42-22 over those 20 minutes of play. Southern Miss shot 18-for-45 from the field, while holding UND to 9-of-37 shooting during the stretch.

Southern Miss took a 7-2 lead early in the first but following back-to-back three-pointers from DJ Davis and Kiyah Hurst, the Hawks grabbed an 8-7 advantage. Davis knocked down her second triple at the end of the quarter and UND trailed 21-15 after 10 minutes. Southern Miss totaled two steals in the opening period but forced the Hawks into 10 turnovers that turned into eight points.

NoDak connected on 3-of-6 attempts from deep in the first quarter but would go cold over the next 30 minutes with just one trey on 13 attempts.

Sammiyah Hoskin got the scoring started in the second quarter, pulling the Hawks within four, 21-17. The Lady Eagles, however, began to build up their lead with a 17-3 run over the next three and a half minutes. The Hawks went into the halftime break trailing 43-29 following a Hurst three-pointer on their last possession of the half.

The Hawks offensive woes continued into the third as they shot .211 percent from the field, while USM shot .391 percent, including 12 points in the paint and eight second chance points.

NoDak scored 16 points to USM's 12 in the fourth quarter and were led by Davis and Rakiyah Beal's four points. The Hawks shot .538 percent in the final quarter, their highest percentage of the game.
