Blake’s OT strike leads No. 3/4 UND past No. 9/8 BU, 5-4

BOSTON – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake scored just 20 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime session to guide No. 3/4 North Dakota to a 5-4 win over No. 9/8 Boston University on Saturday night from Agganis Arena in Boston.

Blake's strike was his third point of the game and helped UND (5-2-1) record its first win in Boston over the Terriers (4-3-1) since Mar. 16, 1990 and snapped a six-game winless drought against BU dating back to 2012.

The sophomore was joined by linemate Owen McLaughin, who struck for a goal and added two assists for his second-career game with three points and second this season. Riese Gaber also notched a pair of points, striking for his 50th goal of his career and dishing out a helper.

Ludvig Persson battled between the pipes in the win for the Fighting Hawks, finishing with 29 saves on 33 shots against to record his fifth victory of the year.

After running into penalty trouble on Friday night, North Dakota did itself no favors in the early going on Saturday when Jake Schmaltz was called for a major penalty just over three minutes into the contest. Persson and his penalty killers bent but didn't break and killed off the entirety of the major to keep the game scoreless.

UND seemed to grab the momentum following the kill, taking control of the play at 5-on-5 action before eventually breaking through on Gaber's fourth goal of the season to give the Fighting Hawks a 1-0 lead. The senior collected a slick feed from McLaughlin before wiring a shot over the goaltender's glove to put the visitors in front with just over four minutes to play in the first.

The Terriers answered back with a strong shift of their own, with Hutson dancing at the blue line and firing a shot through traffic to knot the game at 1-1 just prior to the end of the opening stanza.

It didn't take long for the visitors to jump back in front in the second period, striking just 1:01 into the frame on a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from Gaber to Blake and finished off by McLaughlin to give UND a 2-1 lead with the sophomore's second of the season.

UND extended the lead to 3-1 on the power play, with Jayden Perron firing home his first-career strike with the man advantage and fourth of the season just over eight minutes into the middle frame, but BU rallied back again. Hutson showed off his abilities by scoring a pair of goals in the dying minutes of the second to bring the game level at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

NoDak grabbed the lead early in the third once again, as Ben Strinden sniped home a shot over the goaltender on a beautiful faceoff play just over five minutes into the stanza, but BU rallied once again to even the contest at 4-4 late in the period and send the game into overtime.

It took just 20 seconds for Blake to carve through the defense and the goaltender to score his second overtime winner of his career and give UND the 5-4 victory.

North Dakota hits the road to begin conference play next weekend with a pair of showdowns at Minnesota Duluth from AMSOIL Arena.
