ST. PAUL, Minn. – The North Dakota women's basketball team fell in its Summit League opener 95-76 to St. Thomas Friday at Schoenecker Arena.
With an and-one midway through the second quarter,
Kacie Borowicz cemented herself in North Dakota women's basketball history by becoming the program's all-time leading scorer in the Division I era. Borowicz passed Lexi Klabo's mark of 1,633 points with a season-high 32 points and now sits seventh all-time on the UND scoring list.
St. Thomas knocked down its first four shot attempts, all behind the three-point line, as they grabbed an early 12-7 lead. Borowicz scored her points of the day, followed by a
Jayla Owen jumper off the Tommies third turnover to cut the UST lead to one point three minutes into the game. The Tommies three-point barrage would continue, as they knocked down five-of-seven attempts in the first quarter and 13-of-23 in the game. St. Thomas closed out the opening period by outscoring UND 18-4 over the final five minutes.
Borowicz scored 11 of her 15 first half points in the second quarter and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Amber Scalia paced the Tommies, as they continued to build their lead, with 14 points on 3-for-4 shooting from deep. UST connected on nine three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes of play to take a 57-35 lead into the break.
UND outscored St. Thomas 41-38 in the second half but were unable to get within 15 points of the Tommies lead. With 4:58 left in the fourth, a
Mikayla Aumer bucket started a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 16, but the next five points would go to UST who pushed their advantage back to 20 points. Borowicz scored 17 of her 32 in the final 20 minutes on 7-of-13 shooting. After scoring seven points in the third period,
Kiyah Hurst reached double-figures for the fourth time with 12 points.
Alongside her 32 points, Borowicz grabbed a team-high five rebounds, had three steals and three assists.
Sammiyah Hoskin handed out a team-best four assists and grabbed five offensive rebounds.
North Dakota returns to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center Sunday to host South Dakota State at 12:00 p.m.
