Fighting Hawks Fall Against Providence and CSU on First Day of Buc Up Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The North Dakota Softball team opened the second weekend of the season Friday as they battle the rain to get two games in, ultimately falling to Providence in the early game 9-1 and then hosts Charleston Southern to cap off the day 10-5.

Emily Jonte (1-2) picked up the win for Providence in game one while Jackie Albrecht (0-3) took the loss. In game two Riley Lauffer (1-0) got the win for CSU and Lauren Feld (0-2) took the loss for UND.

Game One

Against the Friars, Katie Joten, Cassie Castaneda and Madison Pederson all got hits for the Fighting Hawks while Taya Hopfauf came in to score the lone run of the game in the fourth inning. During each of the first four innings UND got runners on base, but only Hopfauf came in to score. After reaching on a fielder's choice she moved to second on a wild pitch then to third in the same way before coming in on a passed ball.

Game Two

Against the Buccaneers, In the top of the second Lauren Brown walked with one out and then stole second with two outs. Annabelle Winter single to center, which brought Brown in to score and give the Fighting Hawks their first lead of the season.

After an eight run bottom of the second, UND chipped away at the lead as they scored on an RBI double by Joten, who drove Winter in from second. With the game at 8-2, Brooklyn Morris hit a two run single in the top of the fifth to bring in Brown and Baylee Howley and make it 8-4. In the top of the seventh, Pederson brought Kaycee Hayes in on a sac fly to make it 10-5, which is how the game finished.   

 

Key Points

·         Hayes and Joten each had three hits on the day, with Joten having one in game one and two in game two

·         Lauren Brown was the lone Hawk to score two runs on the day, and walked three times in game two

·         Morris and Winter both produced their first career RBIs in game two

·         Makaela Carr had a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth in relief in game two, she pitched 4.1 innings in the game and allowed just one earned run

The Hawks resume play tomorrow morning at 9 AM (CT) as they take on UMass to open the day and then take on Providence right after with an 11:30 AM (CT) scheduled first pitch.
